new network setup

hi
i need to setup connectivity between 12 desktop systems all of which are windows xp proffesinal .

system one is connected to internet at a speed of 512kbps with adsl modem. i want share all the bandwith equally between remaining 11 systems . how to achive this ?

shall i use HUB or SWITCH.

all the systems are in same house but in diffrent rooms, shall i go for wireless or wired networking.
if wired plese specify the model which is better to go.
if wireless tell me which brand n model of wireless router , wireless lan cards and accesspoints shall i go for.

Switch.
If you want the cheaper route go wired. But it all depends if you're able to run the wires.
Also, are all the systems going to be accessing the internet at the same time? What kind of bandwidth do you have?

does your asdl modem have a built in router? if not your going to need a router also. Also use a switch instead of a hub.

for wired model, for my home network, i use a linksys wrt54g wireless router. For a switch, I would go with a linksys model also.
 
If you can do wired you will get the best performance. I would get a Linksys Router to hook em all up and the you can use DHCP to assign them ip address. With the router you will have added protection of being on a NAT and not as easily accessible to internet hackers
 
yeah you'll need a router to share the connection between all the computers, then a switch would be best for connecting all of them. Like everyone else said, wired would be best, but if you must go wireless, Linksys has a better reputation than some other wireless brands. 3Com has good wired switches. If wireless, be sure to enable at least WEP, and if you can setup WPA or WPA2 for security. You could even do a combination of wired/wireless if you don't have any network drops in some locations.
 
hi all, thanks for ur replys , i will go for wired network only, the adsl modem has inbuilt router . i will go for a 16port switch. is the lan cable between router to switch and from switch to 11 systems shoudl be straight pinout or cross over ?

from router to switch may require (should require) a crossover, assuming the "Modem" is a "router/switch" combo, like most SOHO gear
 
Errrr....

Please keep in mind this setup will give all computers access to ALL the bandwidth. If someone decides to run a bittorrent, it will take EVERYONE's bandwidth.

Just in case you weren't clear on that - because I saw you said "share equally".
