New Netflix program - $10.95 per month

Went to cancel my Netflix $13.95 per month (2 movies out at a time), and got offered an "economy" account:

You will be able to rent up to 4 movies per month.
Membership fees are billed at the beginning of each period.
The regular price of the Netflix Economy program is $10.95 (plus applicable tax).

Rather than rent "unlimited" number of movies per month, you can only rent a total of 4 a month. I still have the same movies for the last three weeks straight , so I thought this might be a good deal.

netflix is good for me since I live in SJ and most of the movies atleast for me come from the SJ center. 1 day turnaround.

but I don't kow why someone would want this "new" program. the extra 3 dollars is much more economically cheaper. atleast I think so.

blockbuster is 4 bucks now and that's 2 nights.

Currently canceled my netflix account till summer months when I have no class. Then I'm gonna rent as much as I can in 30 days.

Haven't tried Netflix yet, but am thinking about it. Sounds good that they are flexible with their programs. I caught the guy that started Netflix on The Screen Savers...I think it was around Xmas 2K2. It was pretty interesting how he got the idea.

It's a great deal if you like anime, hong kong martial arts / gun operas, samurai, french, BBC, oldies, etc. and aren't happy with the selection at your local blockbuster. If you just like the latest Hollywood releases then it's a bit less hot. No late fees though.

Netflix doesn't have the latest releases? Damn. Seems to me that'd be the hottest way they could do their business. I for one would definitely sign up!

I wonder when internet Pay-per-View will get started doing this...

They do have the latest releases, the problem though is the waiting lists are usually backed-up big time, sometimes you need to wait a month or two to get a very hot new title. Other than that, I was pretty happy with them for the year, or so, that I was a member. The reason I actually canceled because the 4 or 5 movies I was getting a month wasn't worth the $20 bucks I was paying, something like this however sounds pretty good.

4 - 5 movies a month would cost you more than $20 at Blockbuster. So you were getting a good value. I agree with the new releases thing though. If you join Netflix, you need to get normal DVD release times out of your head. Just pretend a DVD comes out one or two months later and all will be fine. Sometimes, I put movies in my queue before they're out of the theater. LOL. Netflix rules our world.

I believe this is a regional thing.

I asked serveral blockbuster within 20 minutes driving time and they have never heard of it.

they've heard of the gamers pass. Same idea but just for games. but nothing on dvds.

Whether Netflix is good for you, and if so which plans works for you, depends very much on your viewing habits. I pay $20.95 a month for 4 movies out for an unlimited time. I average more than 2 movies a week so that's at least 8 a month. That's a lot cheaper and easier than going to my local Blockbuster where the place is crowded, the DVDs are scratched, and the lines are long. Netflix does have the latest releases but you may have to wait. If you're the kind of viewer who wants to watch very specific movies at specific times, it's not for you. I have a queue that's over 40 movies deep. Sometimes, I get the recent releases out of pure chance. If not, that's still ok 'cause the queue is deep enough that there's going to be something on it that's available. They do have a very large selection; much larger than all the video rentals places near me combined. I like being able to get older and rarer movies on dvd. Lastly, turnaround time is quick for me since there's a processing center nearby.

Netflix isn't for everyone. Take the time to think about your viewing habits before subscribing.

Its called the freedom pass, I just signed up yesterday for it, I did netflix for awhile and it is good but like what has been said if you want new releases you must wait a long time, thats all i rent so blockbuster is better value for me.

I thought so too until Blockbuster decided to get all new releases in Full Frame instead of Widescreen. Full frame (4:3 aspect ratio) looks like crap on Widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) TV's.

Does Netflix let you specify aspect ratio when you order?

yes, actually they would just have 2 different listings, same as for R-rated vs. unrated versions (netflix doesn't carry pr0n but they do carry unrated). If they only carry one version it's usually the widescreen.

I signed up back in 1999 (I think) when the original deal was 4 movies for $19.99 (IIRC). The price went up to $20.95 and for a while I was grandfathered at the old price. Later they raised prices for eveyone but I'm still grandfathered to 4 movies. I don't know if I'm considered a "charter" member but I was in on it early and have stayed there since.

So how do we get in on the economy deal? Is this gonna require a call to Netflix? They've always emphasized the $20 plan on their website and it's usually a pain to find any other programs.
