? new national police ?

I'm rather confused. Were these protests occurring outside of IRS offices? If so, why is it unusual that Federal police would be protecting Federal buildings?

Perhaps it is just because I have not had my daily cup of outrage yet...

Yes they were. That is local law enforcement's job. This does not fall within any mission statement of the DHS.

The DHS isn't a private security force for federal employees. The IRS has its own security and like I said, there is local law enforcement. None of the local police was in sight.

The FBI does police investigations at the federal level. I'm assuming that DHS protects federal institutions? I see them a lot in downtown Manhattan around Government Center. What bothers me is why the Capital Police from Washington D.C. has to come to our fair city whenever the president is in town. Are they a federal agency or a local one?

Are you sure you're not confusing things? The Capital Police is controlled by the legislative branch and is in charge of protecting Congress. The Secret Service is in charge of protecting the President and has both uniformed and non-uniformed officers.

You're right about the Secret Service, which is why I did not mention them because they come too. But the Capital Police comes as well. I guess some congressmen come with the president?

I work near a federal court house and first noticed the DHS police strolling around right after the Tamerlan and the Dzhokhar got up to their hijinks. They have the DHS party van parked right down the street, too.

FYI, the Federal Protective Service (FPS) is part of DHS and is responsible for security at government facilities. The IRS offices would fall into that category, hence the presence of FPS officers. What exactly is the problem here?

i had no idea DHS had its own police force. wtf.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Protective_Service_(United_States)
The Federal Protective Service (FPS) is a division of the National Protection and Programs Directorate of the United States Department of Homeland Security. FPS is responsible for law enforcement and facility security for nearly 9,000 federally owned and leased buildings, courthouses, properties, and other federal assets and the personnel associated with those assets.

They are coming to put you all in FEMA camps. Glenn Beck told me all about those too and that guy is never wrong.

Dude, I know this is P&N and all, but it's hard to support this kind of thing no matter what political group it happens to be. Hell, even the left isn't happy about the "chilling effects" (that would be their concern as well as the rights) that we're seeing from the administration.

Actually there is the FPS (Federal Police Force) which now falls under the DHS. The FPS were the security for all the government buildings before Reagan made individual agency's be responsible and it all went contractors. The FPS still has uniformed people and oversee the individual agency security contracts.
