i seem to recall either Alpha Flight or New Mutants or some such not only having the first gay superhero, but also the first "openly Christian" hero. or something like that.

plenty of those characters have talked about their religions, beliefs, whatever, for several generations.

This is horrible. I don't think other comic book characters mention their religion at all. Is Spiderman Jewish? Is he a born against creationist weirdo? Does he believe in using condoms?
