New multiplier setting not accepted

So I changed my multiplier setting to 45 in my Gigabyte Z68X board for my i5 2500K and it booted and prime95 stress test went fine.

Then I tried multipliers of 46 and 47 and did the same test in Windows.
However CPU Z and EasyTune6 shows processor running at 4.5ghz and not 4.6 or 4.7 like it should. It shows I have a multiplier of 45 but when I go back to BIOS to check it shows 46 or 47.

Why?
 
Set bios to 4.5, run super_pi_mod-1.5. Then set bios to 4.6 and run super_pi_mod-1.5. See if the results indicate a different speed.
 
If you have been working with Windows-based OC-ing or Tuning software, see if it hasn't saved files which load after booting to Windows, with OC settings previously saved.

I've experienced this annoyance every time I've worked with such software, just because one tends to forget about it.
 
Software overclocking sucks, I only use that on cookie cutter work machines from dell/hp/etc. Always use the bios for overclocking.

I agree, but I've run into this difficulty just for opening the application out of curiosity or attempting to use it for fan-speed control. It would save settings to file, and I'd later find that changes to over-clock settings in BIOS would be overridden by the saved file, requiring some additional tweaks.

Maybe the best thing to do, since we are inclined to do the over-clocking in BIOS, is to simply uninstall the software . . .

In my case, I wanted "total fan control" with an eVGA board using the nVidia 780i chipset, and purchased the "Silverstone Commander" which deployed nVidia's "ESA" feature. This in turn prompted use of the nVidia software that folds all OC'ing and ESA features together.

Well, if you can confirm that the cause doesn't derive from the sort of thing I described, then -- yes -- very strange. And maybe only the motherboard maker can offer you some relief through RMA.
 
Well I reset the BIOS back to default and removed the windows o/c software and now all is good. I am 4.6GHZ and stable so far. Just a little warm (86 max). I'm contemplating if I should go higher.
 
Ran linx at 4800 cpu stays at x48
Ran linx at 4900 cpu stays at x49
While running LinX at 5000ghz with 1.42vcore cpu downclocks to 47-48 for 50% of test.
Once my cpu hits 81c the turbo will reduce its speed.
To correct
a) order a $100 high flow waterblock to drop temps.
b) lower my multiplier and vcore **
 
Every 10c you lower the cpu makes huge difference to your cpus life
This pc water parts are the same since 2004 except for a C2d waterblock in 2006.
The price for a new wb may be worth if I get a few years out it.
The real problem is the size of cpu contact area just keeps getting smaller and is harder to cool with each shrink.
I just sold my last x48 pc to a friend and got more snipper ram on sale.
