Hello,

I need some advice. This weekend I am getting together with 3 other friends for a good ole fashion LAN party. We do have internet access and enjoy getting online together, or playing Co-Op. We usually stay current with most of the popular shooters first then work our way through RTS or RPG's. However, due to life (kids, wives, jobs, money) we haven't seen each other for a couple of months. So we would like to start fresh on something fun.

Below I will list the last games with played. Currently I was looking at Brink or Homefront, but am open to something else if its much better. Overall we enjoy both the CoD style of play, and the BF style. We are older so a little less twitch is always welcome. One of the guys likes a bit more realism, and another enjoys playing just support. So what would you recommend to jump into until we get to BF3 this winter?

Please don't hesitate to offer any good RTS or RPG's if they are top notch we will dive into those as well.

Games Played:

Team Fortress
Battlefield BC 2 w/ Vietanm
CoD MW2 and BO w/zombies
Starcraft 2
Boarderlands w/ Expansions
Portal 2
WoW
Sins of a Solar Empire
Supreme Commander 2
L4D 1 and 2
Alien Swarm

I play with a group of friends quite often for 4 player gaming, I suggest Alien Swarm which is a free co-op game for Steam.

It has one campaign but still pretty fun to tackle if you've never played it together before.

Hi sMiLeYz,

Thanks for the input. That is one game we did play through. It was a good time. I will add it to my list. Anything else you are playing now that is a good time?

If you like military shooters, especially realistics ones, give ARMA 2 a try. Tons of custom coop modes and missions for download, and it's extremely fun whether you're playing with a small group of friends via LAN or in a huge warfare mode online.

EDIT: The learning curve can be steep, but it's extremely rewarding.

Does Arma 2 allow you to play against bots? Do players get lost on large maps? When I see Arma 2 I think of the old Battle Field 1942 mod Desert Combat which I loved. Is that how it is, or is it more like a Rainbow 6 deal that is more simulatorish.

It's definitely more of a simulator. Yes, you can play with and against the AI. The default map is huge and very detailed with many different towns and small cities. In warfare modes, your team (your friends + AI teammates) have a HQ where you can build your own squad (AI soldiers, vehicles, or aircraft) and then your team can be assigned a town to capture. There can be some amazing battles. There's also a custom coop mode you can download called Domination where it's entirely you and your friends against the AI, and you're assigned random objectives (capture this town, destroy this radio tower, rescue the pilots of a downed chopper, etc).

I'm currently playing a custom zombie coop mode called Chernarus Apocalypse. It's pretty intense.

So ARMA 2 looks like it could be fun and something we may dive into if there is a good deal, but what about games like Brink or Homefront? Any thoughts on them?

Red orchestra 2 when it comes out. Looks like it is going to be awesome, including mod and user end server support. A true PC game. Also, world of tanks is fun, if you want a free, quality tank shooter.
