Anyone that thinks Castrol and Wal Mart conspired to pass off sub standard oil, is a fool.

Yea, I buy mine at Walmart too. Never had a problem before. I do avoid Fram filters for the Miata, though.

If you're getting a coupon for a free jug, head over to a parts store and pick it up there. Maybe that way, you'd probably be picking from a different "batch" that might be good. Explain your story and I bet they'd even let you open it in the store before you leave.

I use Wix filters from O'Reilly's, but the oil is close to half the price from Wally.

It wouldn't be the first time wal-mart knowingly accepted lower quality goods at a discount. It also happens with tires.

The oil meets the API SN spec, I doubt there is a conspiracy, especially because if Castrol trashed a lot of engines they will get sued like crazy. I know Wally has lower quality stuff for other things, like rubbermaid containers. Now I could see Castrol selling all of the stinky stuff to Wal-mart once they knew it meet the spec.

Something interesting, the Castrol GTX 5 qt jugs are labeled specifically for Wal-mart, they have something about recycling the oil there.

Yea, I saw that... but my Walmart doesn't have an automotive service center - so where is it supposed to be recycled? I feel like a jerk walking in to the parts store, dumping my oil, and buying nothing. LOL!

For the record I have never had a problem with buying oil from Wal-Mart. Both Castrol GTX and Mobile 1 are just as good at Wal-Mart as anywhere else.
