And QHD.

I'm predicting that the Moto X Play's battery capacity will become the norm next year.
Moto is still a non-contender IMO. If the X Play sells well enough, Samsung et al might pay attention, which is what needs to happen for everyone else to. Otherwise, the X Play will just be a one-off, just like the Droid Turbo was.

I'd love a huge battery in my phone. 3,600 mah or bigger would be a huge plus.

You'd have to charge your phone less, so that would be less charge cycles on the battery extending the overall life of it.

With no contracts people will start keeping their phones longer, so we need bigger built in batteries that will last some time.

I've had to replace 3 cell phone batteries in my time due to not holding a charge anymore. I'm not looking forward to doing it again

The difference this time is that Moto X Play is truly a global product. Droid Turbo didn't have an impact because it was locked to one single company in one single country.

I suspect that Google will copy Motorola and put large batteries in the Nexus phones (this is what is rumoured). That will start the chain reaction. Next year, I predict that all the flagship phones will have larger batteries than this year's flagships.

It's only a week until the Moto X Play goes on sale in the UK. Not long now!
Not long for people in the UK. I wonder how hard it will be to get one in the US.

I'm still shocked they didn't release the play in the US. I'm sure it's gonna come to verizon as a Droid something

Moto X Play has arrived on Moto Maker in UK! £279 for 16GB, £319 for 32GB. Delivery estimate; 26th August 😀

I've personally ordered one with a Cabernet backing and Metallic Red accents.

Nice. Just not sure i can do a 5.5" phone though. I have original X at 4.7". Maybe 5" be nice size. Plus i have manlet hands to boot. 🙁
Me too, being as short as I am (5'5"). I struggle to use my Nexus 5 one handed, so I'm already trained to use it two handed most of the time.

I'm pretty surprised that the pure isn't being talked about more. Is there something I'm missing or is it as good as it looks?

We have one of the first Moto X Play reviews!

https://www.androidpit.com/motorola-moto-x-play-review

Key points from review:

- solid build, not flagship premium quality though (plastic)
- great display, little dim in direct sunlight
- fluid software, virtually stock Android
- great general UI performance (no stutters)
- good game performance (Real Racing 3, GTA San Andreas, Sonic Dash etc.)
- no overheating Snapdragon 615
- decent camera for the price, acceptable low light quality, not too much noise, great HDR, overall not as good as top flagship phones of 2015 though (lacks OIS)
- battery that lasts all day (7-8 hours under heavy usage)

Overall sounds like it lives up to the hype in all aspects except for the camera - which is still good but no match for the top Android flagships 🙂

I still can't believe the play has the huge battery and the style doesnt. The style would of sold a lot better if it would of gotten that battery.

Either way I'm looking forward to getting a style. I'm tired of waiting on Verizon and samsung to push out updates. 5.0 was such a huge fail and they just let everyone deal with it for what 6 months now and no sign of 5.1 for verizon yet

The more I see how OIS is implemented in iPhones, the more confident I am in the technology. Yeah, it seems to be able to give 2-3 stop advantage which is pretty significant. So all that bickering over f/2.2 lenses versus f/2.0 and marketing terminology of 33% more light, well 2-3 stop advantage = 100% to 300% more light.

Isn't it better to have both available to the camera? f/1.8 or 1.9 lens combined with OIS.

And probably more accurate right now to say "implemented in one iPhone" not iPhones 🙂

If I can't have both....

I would rather have the fast aperture. OIS doesn't help subject movements. If I want to take a steady shot, I just hold it steady. (Not fair for most folks, I can take a pin drop sharp picture with a crop body SLR with a 135mm lens at 1/30th of a second.)

Finally received my Moto G 2015. I ordered the 2GB RAM/16 GB storage model on 8/9 and got it yesterday. I switch out phones very often and basically only use high end devices. I swapped from the iPhone 6 to this. I am kinda scared at what 'downgrading' to a mid tier phone would be like. I'm actually pretty content with it so far.

The phone is handling everything I throw at it just fine. I don't really play games these days, so this should be sufficient for all my needs. I wish it had a nicer display - not necessarily more pixels, but better color reproduction. I would've loved an AMOLED display to take true advantage of Moto display. I should have a better idea of what battery life is going to be like tomorrow. So far, I'm happy with price. I wish it had WiFi AC, NFC, and a better screen to body ratio. The side bezels are kinda big. I'm loving the microSD expansion - popped in a 64 GB card. I also unlocked the bootloader (Moto makes this easy) and rooted it as well.

I received the Moto X Play today.

It's good, but coming from a Nexus 5 there's some aspects that are a clear downgrade. Others are a clear upgrade, however.

Firstly, the screen gets brighter than the Nexus 5 and looks just as good. I don't notice the downgrade in PPI at all. There is a vivid colour mode that's enabled by default, which leads to slightly more saturated colours than the Nexus 5.

The speaker is a clear improvement over the Nexus 5. Better in every single regard. Loudness, clarity, bass... everything. No contest.

The build feels nice and solid. Comfortable to hold in the hand. Dust can become trapped around the edges of the glass screen though and the buttons feel cheap as they rattle audibly if tapped - they are fairly loose fitting compared to the Nexus 5. However, haptic feedback feels better than the Nexus 5 and isn't as noisy.

The phone is slower than the Nexus 5. Animations aren't quite as smooth and there's usually a bit more stutter. It's not massive difference, but it's immediately noticeable with both side by side. GPU performance, while again worse than the Nexus 5, can still allow for flawless playback of games such as Smash Hit (high settings), Sleepy Jack and Jelly Defense. I have tested all of my live wallpapers and they run fine too.

Camera is definitely better than the Nexus 5 in daylight. It loses this massive advantage in low light though but still manages to outperform the Nexus 5, despite the lack of OIS which is impressive. I shall upload samples soon.

The lack of a gyroscope is a disappointing omission. The Nexus 5 has this and this means that the Moto X Play lacks the ability to take photo sphere and panoramic shots in the Google camera app.

Battery is a clear upgrade over the Nexus 5. Currently at 78% and my screen has been on for 2h 11m so far - a large section of that was benchmarking using 3DMark with screen brightness at 50% (adaptive enabled). So first impressions of the battery are very good indeed. Will need longer to fully establish just how much of an improvement it is.

That concludes my first impressions. I like the phone. It's great in many regards, but there are some noticeable compromises that makes it feel less of a bargain than the Nexus 5 was back in 2013. I am happy with it overall, but I suspect I shall jump ship to the new LG Nexus once that is released.

I'll post more once I've had a bit more time with the phone.

Uh oh, I thought 32GB was the max? Damn. Time to buy another SD card?

This shows the max is 32GB?

Manufacturers often claim SDHC max while the hardware is actually capable of supporting SDXC. I have a new Acer netbook that claims to only support 32GB but worked fine with a 128GB SD card (unfortunately the card itself died rather quickly, through no fault of the PC itself, I'm getting a refund via Amazon).

You're right - Moto claims it will support 32 GB max. It does work with 64 and 128 GB cards. The theory is performance could degrade when indexing the card, at least that's what people are saying. I just tried it with a fast PNY card I had laying around that I was using in my GoPro, which can record with that same card in 4k video.

Also; could Moto X Play have PDAF support after all?

Moto X Play review | MobileSyrup.com

"I’ve confirmed with Motorola that the Play also incorporates Phase Detection Autofocus, a method of focusing that ensures accuracy and speed in most lighting conditions."

Sounds too good to be true, but I have noticed fast focus with this camera so I can believe it. The question is; why would Motorola intentionally omit this crucial selling point and marketing feature from the official specifications if this is indeed true?
