Another basic Newbie question. When I hook my current Hard Drive up to my new Epox Motherboard do I need to re-format and start from scratch , or can I just continue using the OS and Software that is already installed on the Hard Drive?

Which mobo are you changing from and to? Do they have a different chipset? Usually Your always better off doing a clean OS install.

Upgrading from an IBM Aptiva with an AMD K6-2 CPU to an EPOX 8KTA3 with a Duron 800mhz CPU. I'm assuming that Windows (98SE) may have problems finding the Devices (modem, 3D card etc) on the new Motherboard, but thought there may have been an easier option than starting from scratch.

you can get away with not doing it, but you are much better of with a clean install. If you have a CD Burner copy all files you will need to a set of CDs and do a wipe. Then just copy your files back!

if you DON'T want to re-install, you can just delete everything in device mananger under "system" (this is all stuff related to the mobo)

remove it all in safe mode if need be, and then shut down...install new board, and 98 SHOULD be able to recover after finding all the new hardware

i've successfully done this before, BUT, i usually end up re-installing after a couple of months anyway

this question was asked not too long ago and the response was this:

"if you dont want to do a fresh install make sure you before you shut down your machine for the last time that you go into regedit and delete the following directory

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum

and windows will redetect all of your hardware

also install the basic microsoft ide drivers before moving the hd to the new machine. otherwise you'll end up in trouble. at least with win2k you do.
