i'm thinking i should get a new monitor, because my current one has craptacular refresh rates at higher resolutions, and i think its causing my games to look bad. right now i have a ViewSonic A70f 17inch flat screen. i'm running windows xp, so i also run refresh lock to get the best refresh rate possible, but i still cant get above 85hz from 1024x768 and up. what would be a good monitor to get? i cant afford a flat panel, but i would like a 17 or 19 inch flat screen.

Personally I'd drive over to Office Depot and buy the 17 or 19in KDS XFlat. No shipping charges, low price, and you can return it if you aren't happy.

i've been doing a little research, and i can't find a 19inch flat screen with a resolution higher than 85hz at 1280x1024. is that the highest it goes?

does brand make a big difference, or monitors pretty much just monitors across the board? i saw one hyundai monitor, 19 inch 1600x1200 at 85hz for only $170. i think i paid more for my 17inch viewsonic. i've never heard of hyundai either, unless its made by the car company. i'm just worried i'll get another disappointing monitor.

Whats your budget? Sumsung makes a good 19" thats pretty cheap as well.... you could always look at Dell monitors too... they always have 10% off with another $30 stackable coupon.

How are those XFlats anyways? I am looking for a 19" CRT and I hear nothing but good things about the KDS XF-9E and I hear it is at stores but I can never find it (i've checked Office Depot too).

JediJorgie, my current pick is the NEC FE991SB. I haven't heard anything bad about it, and it is $256 on Newegg.com w/ no shipping charges. Thats one that I suggest for you. However I am not concrete on it, because I am very picky when it comes to monitors (my eyes are very sensitive to them...VERY) so anything that just barely makes the cut is probably outstanding anyways :p. Check that one out...hope it helps!

I checked out the NEC FE991SB its has some pretty low refresh rates 1024 x 768 @ 85 hz I can't see getting a 19" and not running atleast 1280 x 960 at 85 hz but thats IMHO

you cant see anything above 65hz and its around 60 for most people. personally im going to get an NECFP912-SB
no 19 comes close to its resolutions and it has a very good refresh rate. the mitsu monitors are also extremely kickass thou they usually cost slightly more.

If your thinking about a KDS, I have an XF-7b and I am really disappointed with it. You can only use 1280 x 1024 at 60hz, so 1024 x 768 is really the highest useable resolution. At 1024 x 768 and 72Hz it will often freak out and give a display out of range message. It doesn't do that at 70Hz, but every few minutes the screen will kind of shimmer or wiggle...it gets very annoying. If I had it to do over, I wouldn't have bought it.

Lucky for me, I won a flat panel at the microsoft 2003 rollout last week ;)

I have a 17 inch Hyundai monitor and I have had no problems with it:).

Do you have that monitor? I was looking at the Viewsonic G90f. I am trying to decide between the G90f and the FE991SB. How good is that monitor?

They have the FE991SB at a store nearby now, so I will check out these "low" refresh rates for myself. Though I'm sure they probably have them pre-set at 85hz but can go much higher. The horizontal and vertical sync rates are what...30-96kHz and 50-160Hz? Of course they can go higher...some manufacturers have them preset at 85Hz (generally don't need anything higher) too.

Oh yea, I had thought the Hitachi CM721F was good cuz I haven't seen a bad Hitachi...but I can't find anyone that has it :p so I gave up on looking at that one. From what I hear though, JediJorgie, Viewsonic's Graphics series is extremely good so i'm sure you won't regret that purchase (and I might go that route too). However, I have heard bad things about the 95f+ and good things about it, so I suppose its a toss up unless someone speaks up in here about the monitor.

Don't get the Viewsonic! I recently tried two of the A90f+ monitors, both were awful and went back to the store.

samsung 900nf should do the trick for ya, my 700nf does 1280x 960 at 150hz max ( i only keep it at 110) you have to uncheck display only supported rates, but it handles it with ease.

check the 955df too, i dont know much about it but samsung monitors ROCK

Actually, what about the 957MB? I hear high things about it and I saw the 17" version of it in the store and it looked really really nice. It is $297 w/o a shipping charge on Amazon.com (cheaper than most other reputable sites...$320 total on Newegg even) and places like PCWorld rank it #1 on their lists.

You should check out Dell's store, they have some very good deals on excellent monitors, plus I hear that if you ever have problems with them, it is very easy sending it back with Dell. I would also look at Newegg.com too. These are the ones I generally look at (Dell's store, Newegg and Monitors direct) and I highly recommend all of them.
