I run xfired 6990's and currently have a Hannsg 281 27.5 inch monitor. I like it and it was pretty good value when I bought it but I'm itching for an upgrade now. I like the fact it's 1920x 1200 rather than 1080 and just cancelled an order for an Asus VE278q because I'm not sure it'll be very much better than the hannsg. I'm not especially bothered about features other than no ghosting/input lag and a clear crisp picture. Any suggestions for a 27" or larger replacement, ideally 1920/1200? OR should I wait for 3d to become mainstream and 120hz? I use it for gaming and watching movies plus web surfing and occasional home office work.

For what specific reason are you looking to upgrade? A new 27" 1920x1200 monitor is practically impossible to find. At 27" the common resolutions now are 1080P and for high-end monitors 2560x1440.

I'd like a prettier picture no more than that. I'm edging towards dell u2711 but I'm tempted to go for 30inch as at least I'll have higher screen resolution as well as more real estate.

If you're looking for an overall better picture quality it definitely sounds like your a candidate for an IPS monitor; the HannsG 281 series are all TN as far as I can tell. The difference is that IPS monitors have true 24bit color and minimal color shifting even at wide angles, at the cost of a slightly higher response time.

I can't dig up any 27" 1920x1200 IPS monitors, so a 2560x1440 model like the U2711 is going to be your best bet.
