is there any benefit uprgading my mobo? i have an asus p35 based mobo, not sure of the exact model, it's been so long since i opened it up. i got it like x-mas time and i know for sure it's a p35 with crossfire support and built in wifi with dual gigabit. is there any benefit in upgrading to an x48 or p45 based board? 1 of my drives failed and i have to reinstall windows, so i'm ripping out my old drives and putting in a couple velociraptors and my 4870x2 and figured i may as well change the mobo out too if it'll help. i'm looking to stay in the DDR2 standard.

What CPU are you using at what OC? The P45 would be a good option, it'll run at PCI-E 2.0 16x for the 4870X2 and it runs cooler and in most cases OCs better than the majority of the competition. Have a look at the MSI P45's / Biostar Tpower P45.

if you intend running a single gfx card I wouldn't bother changing mobos to a P45 etc. as imo the performance difference will be negligible.

The x38/48 mobos are slightly better with multi-gpu setup than the P35/45. With your 4870x2, I'd stay with the P35 unless it has issues you are tired of dealing with.

Keep the P35, wait for neha. After Neha hits 775 hardware prices should fall and you can either get Neha or cheaper 775 gear.

yeah, that was the other thing stopping me. new socket hardware and i know i'll probably be one of the early adopters anyway. i guess i can rough it out for a few more months with the old P35 and 4870x2 :(

When is that suppose to come out? I want to build a new system, but not sure how long I want to wait.

It comes out this fall and it's going to be hellaciously expensive. Unless you want to blow bling and deal with first gen early adapter issues, most of us are going to wait some months before taking the leap.

Keep the P35 board. Use it for another 9 months at least.

That's what I'd do at least.

Well I have a p4 system I built in 2002..Maybe I will wait until the new stuff comes out and get the Asus rampage extreme with a q9650 cpu and ddr3, gtx 280 video card. Prices should drop on those by then. I already bought a coolermaster cosmos s case.

If you want to build this very moment.. a p45 is a good choice like others said for the pci 2.0 support if u want CF or sli..But if you are just going to grab one card the gains from a newer chipset probably aren't worth the extra cash. If you can wait a few months and you have the money for the nehalem...it going to be a real solid chip from what I have read. GL

For sure I am going to run one card.
