New Mobo = DVD Death?

Hey all, here's my dilemma du jour:

I upgraded my motherboard from an ASUS K8V SE Deluxe to a DFI nF4x Infinity (so I could switch over to PCIe). I installed Windows XP using my Pioneer DVR-108 (which is the master on my secondary IDE, and had been on my ASUS mobo). Bear in mind, that I just unplugged the whole secondary IDE chain from one board and into the next.

Windows XP finished installing and after reboot, my DVR-108 won't read any discs, and it comes up as DVD writer in the device manager, but it won't read anything now.

I've upgraded the bios on the motherboard and I've also downloaded the latest Nforce drivers I could fine (6.53?)

I also tried 'uninstalling' the drive from device manager and letting it be redetected on a subsequent reboot and that did nothing.

Anyone else got ideas because I'm out.

Here's what I think are the details:

Windows XP with SP2 on a SATA HDD
Primary IDE: Hitachi PATA as a master
Secondary IDE: Pioneer DVR-108 as Master, Pioneer DVD reader (I forgot the model) as secondary)

Same setup as I had on the ASUS, although I do realize it was a different chipset on that board.

Try switching it to slave, and the DVD-ROM to master. If that doesn't work check for a firmware upgrade for the drive. BTW, are you using the nV SW IDE drivers or the default MS ones?

Nope, in fact the SW IDE drivers would ahve been more likely to cause issues IME. Have you tried reversing the master/slave yet?

Nope, still stuck at work. You're talking about the IDE controller drivers, right? I could try rolling them back.

Thinking back on it, I installed the lastest Nvidia pack which asked did I want to install the SW drivers, so maybe I AM using the nvidia ones after all. I'll have to check later this afternoon.

Chances are I'm going to have to reinstall Windows again, is it advisable to install the nForce updates, short of the SW IDE drivers?

I'm not a fan of the activearmour stuff either, so I'd just stick the drivers and forget the software for that personally. But, before doing a full reinstall, try just swapping the drives as master/slave, as I've seen some strange behavior with nF chipsets and using a DVD +/-RW as master and CD/DVD-ROM as the slave in the past. Sometimes a firmware upgrade for the optical drive can do wonders too. Always a good TS step to try another cable too.

This is wacky, I've never seen drivers this touchy.

I backed out my IDE drivers to the original "standard" drivers, to no avail.

I swapped, like you said to try, and voila, we can read DVDs now...but, still issues with reading CDs.

It will read the disc name now, but spins up real loud and if you try to browse the CD, it just hangs.

Tried reinstalling the nvidia SW controllers and that's not helping, either.

I also already have the latest firmware for my drive, unfortunately.

Bah, it's a moot point for now. I had read on some other sites, similar problems solved by moving the DVR and making it the only device on a chain, but in the process I got a cable stuck in my power supply's fan and it smoke the supply (an old one anyway).

Upgrade on the way, so the mystery remains unsolved till then.
