New mobo/cpu/ddr ram package.

Imy thinking of buying a chip (decided on amd xp, just havent picked the number) and some new mobo. And a 256 mb ddr stick of ram for it. My price range is about 500 bucks.

Any suggestion?

$500 would get you a really sweet system. I just spent around ~$430 on an Abit KR7A-RAID, Athlon XP 1600+, and Crucial 512 MB PC2100 CL2.5 RAM. Also I bought with Amex Blue so if price drops I get the difference back.

My recommendations with prices (all prices include shipping).
Motherboard: Asus A7V266-E ($161) or Abit KR7A-RAID ($169)
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1600+ OEM - $124.95
RAM: Crucial 512 MB DDR PC2100 CL2.5 RAM - ~$153 (make sure you follow
this link when buying from Crucial - 15% off!)

That's basically top of the line products for ~$440. You can invest the rest in a better CPU. Also make sure to get a good heatsink/fan combo.

Get something better:

Shuttle AK35 GTR (has RAID, ata133, and better on-board sound) 6PCI, 4 DIMM
256MB PC2100 Crucial RAM
Athlon XP 1900+
Therlmalright SK6 with Delta 7K RPM Fan
Artic Silver II tube

total with s/h = $490

Actually, after reading this, maybe you should get the Soltek SL-75DRV2 (great OCer) or Soyo SY-K7V Dragon Plus! (onboard LAN, 6.1 sound) and save around ~$50.

I just installed my Soltek 75DRV2 today. Install went well.

Soltek75DRV2 $99
Athlon 1600 $122
Thermaltake Volcano 7 $27
Crucial 512 DDR $ 154

Total 402 + $14 shipping @ NewEgg

Before you take any suggestions, you really need to say more about what your needs are. Do want/need onboard LAN or sound? Will you overclock, and if so, how intensively? Do you want RAID? etc, etc. Almost all of the current KT266A mobos perform within a couple percentage points of one another, so your choice should really depend on what your going to do with it. And if your not in a hurry, it wouldn't be a bad idea to wait for the new DDR 333 boards to get a good round of testing and bug-fixing before you purchase.
