New Memory Chip won't work. Why?

I just purchased another 128mb PC100 SDRAM memory chip. upon installing the chip, my system failed and gave me an error message that said something about unstable memory.
Since I am only a computer novice, I shut down my system and removed the chip until I could find out what is going on. My system is an AMD 800mhz, running with 256mb of SDRAM. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

You might try setting all your memory slots to the slowest possible timings. Then crank em up slowly, testing extensively at each speed.

Will just the new chip work on its own. I would make sure its not a compatibility issue between which ram bank can take what ram. Just try to diagnose the new stick of ram on its own. Might just be defective.
