New Memorex DVD burner not seen in Windows

I just helped my brother in law install his new DVD burner. It is the master drive on the secondary IDE channel. On first boot it did not show up in Windows (XP pro, SP2).

I removed the slave IDE hard drive on the channel and then it did show up. I then put the slave drive back on and still both drives showed up. A few minutes later we re-boot again and now the DVD burner does not show up.

The burner is a Memorex from Office Depot, I don't have the model # right now.

Would it be considered a flaky setup when the burner shares a channel with another device, even if the burner is the master?

his config is:

boot drive is scsi HD

---

Primary IDE master is Lite-On CD burner

No Primary IDE slave

---

Secondary IDE master is the new DVD burner

Secondary IDE slave is a 180GB hard drive

Thanks for any help.

You might double check that the DVD is jumpered properly, it might have the Master jumper but also a factory test jumper left in place

You could also try making the DVD a slave on the first channle with the CD drive.

The drive had only one jumper set to master. We removed the F drive (storage hard drive that was slave to the burner) and it shows up consistently in Windows now.

If you want to keep that storage HD, try setting both the burner and HD to jumper select. If that also doesn't work, try swapping cables.
