I agree with this...I know you a pushing for cash...but you really don't want your system destroying itself the night you put it together...and it happens...

Well I can buy the case w/o the PSU and save $30...then what PSU would you guys recommend?

He's a bit tight on money, so I'd go with the Fortron AX450-PN.

Ok, im going to buy this PSU and go with the ABIT KN8 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

getting somewhere good now! :)

I've had a few responses with this, but I'm not quite clear on it. Is it OK to buy just 1 stick of 1Gig now, and purchase another later to run on the dual channel? I really need to be cutting corners now as I'm starting to go up above what I really have to spend!

and as always, any suggestions, comments, or ideas are great

Ya one gig is fine and you will always be able to add another later. Glad to see things coming together!

When I do upgrade, will the ram I buy need to meet any certain specs?(such as being the same exact stick of ram I already have in the other channel), or how does that work?

And I suppose of that is it, then I'll go price hunting and post the 'final' build back up on here later..see what we have!

Heres the config i came up with on newegg based on what kind of stuff you want.

mobo: asrock dual sata2=66.99
cpu: x2 3800+=295
ram: 2x1gb cosair vs=133
psu: fortron 450w=50.99
hdd: hitachi dekstar 80gb sata 3.0Gb/s=50
dvdburner: nec 3550a=36.99
case: aspire xdreamer=49.99
shipping=39.72

total=723.18

$276.82 leftover for vid card. Dont know what kind of deal you're going to get with the x1900xt, but it looks like you'll be over $1000. Even with a 1gb ram setup.

When you do decide to upgrade to 2gb you have to buy the same exact ram. The benefits of buying them as a kit is that you are ensured that they are exact.

They don't have to be the exact same but it generally helps to be of the same manufacturer and have the same timings/speed.

The manufacturer part is not always necessary though

Ok, after putting it all together... Here it is.

A-Top XBlade AT859A-BK-2-C Black/Silver Computer Case - Retail

ABIT KN8 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

FSP Group (Fortron Source) AX450-PN, 12cm FAN, version 2.0, 2 SATA, PCI Express, 450W Power Supply - Retail

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 1GHz HT Socket 939 Dual Core Processor - Retail

G.SKILL Value 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM System Memory - Retail

Maxtor DiamondMax 10 80GB 3.5" IDE Ultra ATA133 Hard Drive - OEM

NEC 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE/ATAPI Model ND-3550A - OEM

Grand total here(with shipping) is $669.48
I did price checks with a few sites, but newegg either had the best deal, or was beat by like $1. The graphics card will put me at exactly $1000, so this is working out well.

****
Just so check, I want to make sure everything I have here is compatible with one another, and everything is good to go! I plan on ordering later this week.
****

Any other suggestions/upgrades/comments or anything is still well appreciated!!

And again, thanks a ton guys.

I would consider:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148107

Its SATA which is nice for cable management

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144165

$10 for 40 more gigs...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822145082

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144122

two other good options...

I hold all these in higher regard than a maxtor drive. Just personal preference though

No problem. Remember 5-year warranty....;)

Everything else I like though...especially for the price. I think you are good to go!

Use that $1 you saved with the change wisely...:p

^^^^ I would like to do a 2GB setup, but If it is possible to hold out for a couple months and just use 1GB for now that would be great as i'm REALLY pushin for cash now lol.

HITACHI Deskstar 7K80 80GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

NEC 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE/ATAPI Model ND-3550A - OEM

Video = ATI 1900xt

Definitely open to more suggestions/comments, as they have been a big help so far!
Also, i suppose OCing is possible for sometime in the future, but remember I dont want to do it anytime soon!

thanks!@

do NOT get the SLI board. first off, your ati card won't work with it, second, you won't need a second 1900xt.

i would also get the 250gb Western Digital SE16 hard drive. i know you don't want the extra space but the drive's a lot faster than the one you seleced.

the rest looks good to me

so what is YOUR recommendation for a mobo at about the same price?

as for the 250HD, i could probably upgrade to that in the future, but unless its like a MUST, id really rather wait as i'm diving into funds i dont have now :)

Thanks for the help!

leatherface please ignore this post - alimolem didn't read the rest of this thread to see that you had already moved away from the SLI option and picked the ABIT kn8 ultra, which is NOT an SLI board. Don't get confused...he was referring to the gigabyte, and you made a good choice on the ABIT.

Alright :) no harm done!
Now I wonder...
Would it be more benificial to get 1gig now and just buy the same stick later as an upgrade
OR
just get 2x512 now to compliment dual channel, and when I upgrade, just buy 2x1Gig for3G total?

And now I must think about running on x64 architecture hmmm

I would consider it...you would also get better ram timings.

Just wait for vista ;)
