New MB/CPU on a WIN 7 platform

I'm trying to decide if I will upgrade my vista p-35 machine to win 7 now and get my p-55 i5 750 and board at a later date --- or upgrade to p-55 now and then load win 7,,,,,, question is has anyone done a board swap on a win 7 machine yet???? I'm guessing it should be as easy as pie because vista and win 7 are so closely related. Problem is I don't like having to back up everything in Vista and then recover it to win 7.

I had an Abit Ip35-Pro motherboard. I swapped the motherboard to a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P. Windows 7 sat there for a few minutes installing the drivers for the ICH10R and all the associated USB hub drivers etc. Then asked me to restart. Done.

I have also swapped CPU from a C2D E6400 to a Q9550 and back. No problems. I did go ahead and install the latest chipset drivers from Intel anyway because I didn't feel the drivers from windows would be the latest.

Now if you went from Intel to an AMD or vice versa it might be different.

note: upgrading Vista to WIn 7 was a LONG process. I'd say easily 3 hours for my system. A Fresh install was 45min from startup to installing my drivers.

Thanks CMDRDREDD! You've answered everything - maybe even the things I didn't think to ask. Want to pick up Ultimate upgrade next week but I've got a 15,000 mile service coming up on my car (1,000 miles ago). That could be costly - - - - -

Now if I could just get my wife to give up windows XP we would be getting up to speed. Heck - if she would give up her 865 intel board I'd just give her my p-35 and bite the bullet and make a square one upgrade to P-55 WIN 7.

Any way - time for getting the church ready for today- gotta go - thanks again.

off topic, 15K mile service is little more than oil change, 30K is the expensive one.

on topic, Windows 7 does great on bit older hardware, I installed it on my C2D rig while C2Q rig still has Vista. C2D rig now feels much faster. Win 7 utilizes hardware wonderfully.

That's good to know - I haven't checked with Toyota dealer on cost for this yet. If it's reasonable - I'll probably never have to pay for a 30K service. On three year lease and I'm three months shy of having the car for two years now and just passing 15K. Would be unusual If I clock another 15K before February of 2011.

If it was me, I would keep the P35 system and but Windows 7 on it. I was thinking of making the jump from a 6750 to either Q9550 or the whole i5 upgrade. After reading some threads and doing some research, I'm going with the Q9550 and waiting for the platform to mature a bit, plus I'm waiting to see what the consumer version of Fermi/GT300 is. Depending on price for GT300, I may go SLI with P55 and grab another GTX260.

Sticks - - - -you are right! I'm going to put win 7 on my present system. And go to P55 come Spring. Thanks for cooling my upgrade fever. I can wait for P55.

No problem. Trust me, I went back and forth for about a week on what to do. Another thing that waiting will do is let the prices on the USB3/SATA3 boards come down.

no devices that use those connections really yet. Intel isn't going to impliment it natively until 2011 if I remember right. Honestly I wouldn't buy a board based on that.

Yea, I read the other read detailing all that. Not saying I would buy a board solely on that, but I figure come spring or summer, the price difference between them will be pretty much nil, so why not.
