New mb--cmos checksum error loading defaults on boot!

Is this battery or memory? It's a used soyo via board and I cant get windonw loaded now and getting lots of freeze screens.

actually, last time i had a checksum error, it was the hard drive that i was booting from that was the problem, it was corrupt.

It loads default settings automatically after the checksum error. The hard drive is older but has been working fine up till now. Its a fresh win98se install but continuously freezing up during the process. Hard drive system check is fine prior to start of the install. Partitioned it to 10% for opsys & the rest I didn't reformat as it has programs from the first install plus some drivers. Moved memory over to slot 3.

Its my second try at installing windows as I was having too many freezes during driver installations causing corrupt files so thought I'd start over but its getting worse.

Try reflashing to the latest BIOS per the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure everything (cpu, memory, etc. is fully seated and secure, and that all cable connections are secure. Then make sure HD is properly configured and correctly recognized at boot. Run manufacturer's quality check utility on hard drive. If all OK, repartition and reformat, and then try install again.

It seems to have settled down but occasional lockup (overclocking?) will cause it to boot up with checksum error and then a date error. Is the date error from the default load or vice versa? It takes the new settings fine, just irritating to reload.
