I think he was being quite reasonable. He didn't dictate that to "consumers" (in general) but to "hardcore gamers."
To me, 30 fps is good enough, although I wouldn't mind if Matrox offered better 3D acceleration.
If I want gaming, I'll go grab an nVIDIA card. If I want excellent 2D and DualHead, I choose Matrox any day.
Unfortunately, there are no cards out there (at an affordable price, at least) that offers best of both worlds.
