I got the permanent weapon overheating every now and then too. It wasn't a game-breaking issue though. I think I just saved the game and reloaded, which got rid of it.
A bigger issue was how it seemed to only like certain Nvidia drivers back then. I played through 80% of the game on some 177 driver without any issues, and then got CTDs every 10-15 minutes for the rest of the game with a number of other, newer drivers.
And that's an ownage of the year candidate.
