New Mac user needs help!!

I just got a used Imac (G3 266) with OSX loaded. It's my first Mac and I have no idea how to use it. I don't have instruction manuals so I'll have to learn from scratch. The first thing I'd like to know is how do I resize internet explorer so it covers the whole screen? I click on the + sign but it only gets a tad larger up to a point, but never get as large as I want it to. Also is there a good site to go to so I can become proficient at using this machine? Also what are some good freeware programs to download? I tried to install Mozilla Firebird and have had no luck...... thanks a ton!!
