Most of this is just a lie or has to be done or should be done on all computers. How do they not get sued for false advertising? MS should really just run counter ads to every ad Apple buts out, it would be so easy. Call it the truth campaign or reality campaign.

Yea, personally I think Apple needs to abandon the Mac vs. PC campaign. I love John Hodgeman, but I think the ads are getting to be a bit much. The legalese from the ad in question here, definitely does point to things that apple to Macs as well, so I'm not sure why it was included. Maybe they thought that it'd be so small people couldn't read it? But if that was the case, why not use Lorem Ipsum text or something?

I mean TV ads not pdf's promoted on a blog, and do a real counter ad. Like when Apple released the ad showing all the money MS spent on advertising MS should have shown and ad showing all the money Apple has spent on advertising and of course Apple's would have been larger. For the ad I am talking about in the original post they should make and ad and show what are lies and what has to be done on all computers including Macs. I would even hire two actors to play a PC and Mac just like Apple is doing. For every ad they release, release a counter ad. It would force Apple to stop the campaign or to only tell the absolute truth. Of course MS would have make sure it didn't lie or stretch the truth any or it would backfire.
 
I just chalk it up to marketing by both sides. Marketing is designed to get you to pick their product over another, so by definition it will be one sided. I don't see this as false advertising honestly, if Apple said "Now only $499" in the ad and that turned out to be a blatant lie to get people into stores, then I could see a case, but this is just twisting reality in your favor to make a point. I don't see a problem with it.

Take it for what it is, marketing.

But with the demographic that AAPL is targeting, I can't see very many of them bothering to pause TV or go on the internet to find out what the text says. To them its just a joke at the expense of MSFT.

Its not a very "Apple-owner" thing to do, in my opinion, lol.
 
man CU why aren't you in marketing with ideas like that.... probably because that idea is horrible.

If microsoft countered every mac ad, they would seem desperate and defensive. Their new campaign is a much better way to show cost differences between microsoft and apple, which is a good stance to take, because it's obvious they wouldn't be able to win in a campaign trying to show their product as better. They don't even highlight their product in the ads at all... microsoft ads showing people buying HP and Sony computers would be like a milk commercial advertising refrigerators. How about focus on your product, and not the box your product comes in.

The fact is, Microsoft knows that it will never win a windows vs mac argument in any ad other than cost, so that is their focus. Just like Apple knows bringing up cost in their ads would be silly, so they stick to ease of use, and the highlights of their operating system.

How do you propose they counter a mac gets less viruses ad? "ugh, yeah they get less viruses, but with the new vista protector program, you will get less viruses than you did before, although we still recommend buying a 3rd party virus scanner... " that doesn't come off as a very good ad... so they attack the wallet.. and in these economic times, it's a good place to go.

And the apple pile of money wouldn't be larger. Did you hear the amount of money they paid seinfeld for those 2 microsoft ads? it was way more then hodgman or long make for the mac/pc ads... and that was the point of that ad.
 
Also, in the money pile ad, it wasn't about who was spending more money, the jab that the ad was making that instead of 'fixing' vista, they were spending money on ads.

I personally don't have much of a problem with Vista (why on earth did they have to rename Add/Remove Programs!?!?!?) so this isn't me agreeing with the stance of the ad, so much as clarifying what the ad was saying.
 
I enjoy both ads, but find apples to be much more funny and more untrue lol.

I dunno how the new microsoft ads are not true? Some person walks into best buy and buys a laptop. That is cheaper than the mac they saw.

Havent seen many of the newer mac ads watching them now though.
 
the microsoft ads are true, but a bit misleading, the cheaper laptops don't compare in hardware or software to the macbook. there is no question you can get a laptop from bestbuy for 499 but you aren't getting anything close to the specs of the machine as you do with the macbook. This is what they fail to point out. They say things like:

This one has a bigger screen, which is true, but they fail to mention it uses a crappier integrated graphics chip, and therefor has a lower resolution than the macbook, even though it has a 2 inch smaller screen. Stuff like that is omitted from the commercial. Ads are ads, and they are both going to lie or at least hide facts to make you want their product. If mac said, buy our laptop, unless you want to play a game made after 2001, that wouldn't be a very good ad.

The bigger screen argument can go both ways. I value a smaller screen for portability. Smaller laptops cost a lot more for the most part.
 
Chad while i agree w/ your comments w/ CU, you got it all wrong w/ the laptops comparison. Minus the Bill and Jerry commercials, everything recent by MS Vista commercials have been about being "Utilitarian" from I'm a PC to little kids saying how easy it is to compile a movie to how more bang for buck w/ laptops. They are marketing the strongest side of MS. That is you have choices of myriad of different device to software and product choices thats semi costumed to your needs and experiences.

And while it doesn't have to be true like the Mac commercials, MS is targeting the weak side of Apple. Weak sides are all the rumors and common believes that maybe false. IE windows crashes more often, or mac hardware is more expensive. In reality there are some products that cost just as much as mac and there can be more crashes on a mac. No ad can change this mind unless their tech or very knowledgeable friend says otherwise. So they'll just playing the advantage by attacking each other's weakness, what Pepsi and Coke does and BMW and Mercedes does.

Lastly to CU. Jesus have you never seen any Superbowl ads in your life? When Miller made fun of Budweiser it just went into a series going back and forth. Eventually ending up with no one really winning. But Bud decided to spend more and gain a very small margin of believers.... in all it was fail. Btw you're wrong about MS they spend more $$ per year on ads than Apple *because worldwide spending + MS Office and other software/support, not just vista.* If was a $$, they could win, maybe. Problem is MAC are seen as cool. No matter what you think, general consensus is MS is boring, very boring. Making a counter argument is 200% extra fuel to the fire because it deems MS in the absolute category that we are the stuck up anal retentive suits that they make fun of w/ John Hodgeman. It doesn't matter it true or not. Sometimes its bout flanking the enemy and not attacking directly.

It looks like you bought into the hype. Most integrated graphics chips can handle almost all laptop resolutions with ease. Its the screen type that determines max resolution.

you are full of it, like other person told you screen resolution is not function of graphic card, even 8MB card can display 1680x1050.

Now, my 15.4" Dell came with terrific 15.4" 1680x1050 screen, GeForce graphics, etc, and it was cheaper for about $1,000 than comparable mac book pro
let me remind you that apple used exclusively intel graphics in all non-bookpro models until this year. your only option to move to non-intel graphics was mac book pro

and today, they are still using integrated nvidia 9400.
 
I got a great deal on my laptop. It was about 450 shipped from dell, dell studio.

Has led screen, webcam, 9 cell bat, finger print reader (dont use), 2.0 GHz C2D, 3GB ram, intel crappy gma 4500HD (dell sucks with drivers on this), tons of ports, wireless N.

Only thing i would perfer from the mac is the mouse gestures. And im still not sold on osx because i want an OS that does everything i need without a dual boot/virtualization.

the resolution isn't dependent on the chip and I apologize for one line of misspeaking that has everyone jumping on me. My point is still valid, that a worse graphics card, and a lower resolution is omitted from the ads.
