I don't mind the ads at the top/bottom, but the side ones are annoying. It squishes the forum all up.

I have stopped going to a lot of them actually. And if the ads get too annoying here as well, I'll stop posting here too.

BTW, according to a thread in Forum Issues they're just experimenting right now b/c apparently Google no longer allows the ads on the bottom of the page.

only 20 percent of the screen is taken up, not a bother. 50 percent maybe a bit more annoying but i think is still tolerable

Look at the screenshot I posted in this thread... I'm running at 1024x768 and the ad is HUGE. That really detracts from the forums.
