A small circular magnet about the size and thickness of a standard tylenol/aspirin

What the hell is it for?

Inside the packaging:

1. Mouse
2. MicroUSB charging cable
3. "Manual"
4. Magnet

Not included:

Carrying case like the Anywhere 1 :(

According to this review, it is for attaching the "Viewing Window" - whatever that is.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Logitech-Performance-Mouse-MX.49189.0.html

"... The viewing window is secured with a magnet and allows for an initial visual impression of its design. ..."

Hmm, the magnet had a little spot "embedded" in the plastic packaging of the mouse, so it could be some kind of mounting device? But this doesn't make much sense:

1. The magnet is not strong enough to hold up the entire packaged box
2. The plastic packaging would look awful outside of the cardboard box
3. The magnet was found along the right side of the packaging, so if it was for mounting the box would be oriented sideways

curious

I bet the package can open a front "flap" - like the cover of a hardcover book - allowing you to see the mouse under a plastic shroud (so you can admire it before actually unsealing the box).

That magnet just holds the flap closed :)

Haha! You are absolutely right! There is a small, thin metal (magnetic but not magnetized) disc embedded in the front flap.

Thanks for helping me with this silly mystery.

Glad to help.
I also think these are nice magnets, by the way... they seem stronger than the ones used in toys and fridge door baubles...

haha I just picked up the MX master for a new work mouse and it had the same thing I was like WTF, thought it was a battery at first but didn't see any + or - sign on it.

Then my coworker told me its to hold the flap close on the box as it swings opens to show you the mouse.
