Superman: (2025) 7.5/10

1. This is a popcorn movie. Fun for a watch!
2. I think he's really Karl Urban cosplaying as Superman
3. They REALLY nailed the look of Superman flying!
4. Love me some Alan Tudyk!
5. Mr. Terrific was awesome! Great mask! Next movie needs to be a buddy cop movie with him & Superman. Great fight scene. Reminded me of the Quicksilver scene from X-men.
6. Killer graphics. Metamorpho looked awesome! Mr. Terrific's spaceship looked real. We take great CGI for granted these days!
7. Nathan Fillion's haircut was AMAZING lol. He needs his own movie!

I was really disappointed with this film and I wasn't expecting a lot tbh. My favourite bit was Nathan Fillions Green Lantern, he got the character well.
The rest of it was a bit charmless. Like it didn't know what it always aiming for. Mr Terrific was ok but they seemed to vacillate between him being a geek or a ninja and not knowing which to pick. Hawkgirl was pretty unused.

It was a definite meh out of ten for me.

The Water Diviner - 8/10 (2014) Russell Crowe

It's a very subdued, low key movie about an Aussie soldier/farmer. He loses all 3 of his sons at the battle of Gallipoli (Turkey) in WWI and returns a few years later to try to recover their bodies.

So, the plot is a little bit of a bummer but often very light hearted. Very much a sleeper.

another good film !!!!

I watched Bank Of Dave - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14308636/reference/

English comedy-drama (and it works, for once), based on the real life history of the titular Bank "on" Dave.

Local Burnley entrapreneur Dave has been helping his community for years with private, legal loans, and gets convinced to open a small, regional boutique bank; this requires clearance from the egregiously corrupt Financial Regulation Board, which are abhorred by the idea that a "peasant" could be allowed to open a bank - only THE BOYS get to own bank, not the working plebs.

Well acted (if fairly composed), well paced, well directed, nice music, great story, good dialogues, the ending's a bit weak, but overall a great little film. YMMV if you don't find the yorkshire accept particularly funny.

7.5/10

Apparently the bank is fictional. He never got the licence.

it's now a lending company called "Bank ON Dave" because this was it doesn't give the consumer an impression that it's an actual bank.

The Wikipedia page goes into a fair bit of detail into what is correct and what is fictitious in the film.

And there's an actress called Naomi Battrick that is absolutely gorgeous. I would say it's worth watching.

Dr Who Shada 1979
7/10
unfinished 4parter of Tom Baker's 6th season written by Douglas Adams of hitchhikers fame. the wikipedia entry on this one is fascinating, adams thought he could get his original story in because of how close to the end of season. the producer made him rewrite it in a rush and a crew strike ended up leaving it only 75% filmed.
audio versions were made and in 2017 the bbc released what they had with 2d animation to fill in the gaps.

definitely needed more time to cook and probably several rewrites, but you can see the seed of what was there. just kinda fun seeing young baker and romana (lala ward). i am amazed how out of order the scenes were shot for there to be so much footage available for the 4th episode.

Adams would go on to use the ideas from Shada for Dirk Gently Holistic Detective.

available on YT as the bbc seems to be releasing the original run in order to drive up interest ahead of a licensing deal with disney+.

The Highlander TV show is available for free on streaming:

* Pluto
* Fandango
* Amazon Prime
* Hoopla
* Tubi

Someone did an A.I. 1080p HD upscale from the 720p DVD set:

* Detelecined from 29.976fps to 23.976fps
* Deinterlaced
* Converted to 640x480 square pixels
* All of this was done with 0 added compression and lossless codecs
* Upscaled to 1920x1080 (Black bars on the sides) with Topaz AI Video Upscaler using custom configs
* Saved with the least compression possible from Topaz (uncompressed wasn't worth the extra hassle)
* Encoded to H265/HVEC

LOVED this show when I ws a kid! It's too bad they only made one single movie & not any other ones at all ever :(

i really liked the Highlander series for the first 4 or 5 seasons but it all got a little messy with hunters and the dark side. they got relatively lucky in casting actors who didnt age too badly, but other recurring 'immortal un-ageing' characters gained some weight or lost some hair.

they really should have planned an ending for the series rather than trying to wrap it up with some movies.

it is an interesting ip concept and you hear about reboot movie attempts but the whole thing is a bit of a trap. you need a series if you want to explore the consequences and get the living forever feeling, but with the ending written into the premise you really need an amazing plan/plot that pays off such long character arcs. that and modern recordkeeping makes faking your identity a lot harder.

Lordy, I was so into Highlander as a kid / teen
that's like, a spread of 10 years though.

Me, i've never watched the TV show. Because of UNNAMED HIGHLANDER FILM which released in 1991, and some of my schoolmates were unlucky enough to have seen it in the theaters, and that really put a black mark on anything Highlander.

Yea, 15 really. I got sucked into it around 11-12, so early 90’s, and the 90’s was its hay day.

IMO, it’s not supposed to be super good or anything, just fun. Some of the movies are meh, but I still watched that stuff

There were only 5 seasons of Highlander, just like there are only 2 seasons of Lost :p
