I picked up a new router from Newegg, set it up, and the whole internet setup pages are different, the router has no hardware version number (like WRT54G V2.0) listed, and only WEP encryption, no option for wpa2.

Not sure if I'm posting this as a question, or just as a warning to others buying Linksys routers. I don't know what the deal is, but the newest version apparently does not support wpa2.

Is there a version number printed on the serial number bar code label on the bottom of the router?

No version listed. Unless perhaps I got an old stock v1.0 router, and the number wasn't printed on them? Firmware version is 1.02.1, dated some day in 2003, if that means anything.

The WRT54G v1.0 has a distinctive appearance -- three rows of lights. It also supports firmware versions up to at least 4.x, and supports WPA2.

AFAIK, WPA2 is mandatory for current WiFi alliance certification, so any modern device should support it. Linksys lists it in the data sheet for WRT54G.

I suggest contacting Linksys support to clear up the issue.

Hmm...check if DDWRT runs on the new versions. That might solve your problems (though I know linksys has been reducing the amount of flash memory for modders)
