Linksys has their new firmware up that supports UPnP. Go grab it from www.linksys.com. Windows XP will now automatically detect the Linksys BEFSR41 and stuff like MSN Messenger will be able to make use of it.

there is a problem with msn sometimes cuz it won't send files or something even with the ports opened up on port forwarding or using dmz from what I have read on other forums. I dunno. guess I will try it and see.

Thanks! Just yesterday, the Sales dept. at Linksys replied to an inquiry of mine about the BEFSR41 and it's compatibility with UPnP saying that it was not compatible, and that I needed to get a the new model.

It sounds like the sales people need to talk to the tech support guys.

Perhaps, XP will now check the Linksys website for any firmware updates, when you use Windows Update?

<< so no one knows why windows xp needs to detect the router? >>

UPnP is Universal Plug & Play. Now, the router and the operating system (in this case XP) will negotiate connections so that some applications - such as voice and video communication via MSN Messenger - that were not possible with standard NAT, are now possible.

This upgrade is worth it if you use MSN Messanger and can't get the file sharing or video conferencing, etc. to work. It enables uPNP automatically and my speeds went from 1340kb/sec to 950kb/sec. I disabled the uPNP in the Router, and the speeds were fine again. I did the DMZ host, and MSN messanger works fine with this setting. Afterwards, I immediately removed msn messanger since I hate it. It also automatically sets your MTU to 1492 if you use PPPOE. Other than these couple of new features, it's basically the same no different.

I installed the latest firmware and have seen no bad effects. I can still get my maximum throughput of 3Mbps from my cable connection and all of MSN Messengers features work like a dream (ie. Video, Audio, Applications Sharing, Remote Assistance, Whiteboard).

I don't know if this buys you anything on version of Windows other than XP. Going forward, this is supposed to make the need to forward ports and the like unnecessary but I also heard there are alot of security holes in it as well... go figure.
