Desktop DVD player stopped working.
I ordered the LG for $15
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827136259

All the cheap DVD-RW's had the same ratings with a large enough sample size.
It had the same rating as the others, basically. 70% with 5 stars.

I just installed the $15 LG DVD player.
It technically works, but seems to be a pig.

It takes like a full minute to go to the boot/root DVD menu after I click "Play" in VLC

It also seems to hang when I press "Play Movie" from the DVD root menu.
Takes way longer than normal, to the point where it feels like it's hung, and I start re-clicking "Play"
Also, it keeps going back to the DVD root menu, instead of starting the movie.
I can only start the movie by picking "Scene 1"

What a POS. Is that typical?

Actually, I think it was the DVD itself.
The player is much more normal when I used another random DVD.

also check what controller you have the drive connected to. ive had an issue when i connected my drive to a Marvell sata controller and not the sata port that is controlled by the chipset.

atm,
How do I check that?
I just have 4 slots on the MB for SATA.
Which slot do I want to plug the DVD into ?

That particular DVD may just have an authoring error. Some drives and software tend to handle them better than others. In addition to VLC Player, you might want to give other software a try (such as Media Player Classic, etc).

Concerning the SATA port issue, look in the manual for your motherboard. If your board has multiple ports provided by multiple chipsets, the manual should have a diagram which shows you which ports are supplied by which chipset and their locations.

It's fine. I watched the DVD tonight. Just started it at scene 1. Others should be fine. It's just a small delay up front. Whatever. $15 and problem solved. Glad to have DVD back

you would have to read your motherboard manual. if your motherboard only has 4 ports then id think all 4 would go to the chipset and there is no third party sata controller.
