yeah - this...splitting the player base isn't a good idea..

I paid for 4 copies of L4D and even I think the bitching about L4D2 is a little ridiculous. It's a simple scenario, if Valve makes the new game not worth the price, no one is going to buy it. If it ends up being worth the price, some of us will buy it. The rest of you can spin yourself into a tizzy over every screenshot.

I bought L4D during the 1/2 price sale on Steam a few months ago, so it's not like I didn't get my money's worth with the original. But even still, I don't see myself buying L4D2, if I feel like shooting zombies I'll just play the original. And I agree regarding the Source engine being way too dated, but because of how well it scales on consoles, I don't see it going away until the next gen of consoles appear...

Again, this isn't really a question about buying a new game if its worth it - I have no doubt I'll probably end up prepaying for L4D2 just to get it asap and/or get the beta (if they do they same thing they did for L4D1), etc...

What really gets to some of us is that "what if" question...there are still a lot of things that are wrong with L4D1 that we can't help but question whether or not they would have been addressed sooner if there was more manpower devoted to it. Valve has said they won't abandon L4D1, and I don't doubt it. What sucks is that L4D1 really isn't old or stale yet they're bring out a new game. Had they fixed all that was wrong with L4D1 and improved upon with other such things, we could have had a better game for longer while we waited a bit for L4D2.

Now the kicker is that since they seem to be skirting L4D1 for L4D2, whats to stop them from doing the same with L4D2? The fact that they're seemingly adding so much more to L4D2 makes me think its going to be quite a bit harder to properly balance, if they don't get it right from the start (and I don't exactly expect them to) would they neglect it and put all the fixes and new ideas into a L4D3?

You think they should spend a couple million bucks for the Crysis engine?
I am amazed at peoples opinions on money here at Anandtech. They dont want to spend 25 bucks on a semi-new game, but they think game developers are obligated to piss away tons of cash on new engines for every game.

I dont think you guys realize that a big chunk of the development cost comes from the graphics engine. Thats why many different companies paid for the Quake 3 engine rather than making their own.

And its already been proven that artistic talent has a much larger effect on how a game looks than the number of polygons it engine can push.

As has been said, splitting the available players up between the games is going to be the big issue.
I just hope they add a real server browser.

The game has a server browser with a simple console command.
