New LCD Technology, shipping in November

I wrote to Envision:
Hello,

I am currently in the market for a new LCD and came across this article: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,10085,00.asp

While discussing the article in an online forum, someone mentioned that they had contacted Envision about when an LCD would come out with FFD technology and the response was September. I thought this was a bit early, and, seeing as it is already late September, it was.

Anyway, when can I expect an LCD with FFD to be released?

Thank you.

Their response:
David,

Our monitor with FFD tecnology is scheduled to ship out next month. So it will not be available in the market until Nov/02. The
model is EN-8500 (it has a built-in TV Tuner).

No, tomorrow is. 🙂 I just noticed that too by the way. I kept reading it as Q1 2003 not Q1 2002 as when FFD LCDs are coming out.

So, in 2 months, how much do you think I could sell my CT1904Z for? I really like it right now...but FFD...<drool>

This sounds like a good improvement. I really hope they combine this technology with a 17-19 inch screen that has 1600x1200 resolution. It would be my perfect monitor.

I emailed Envision earlier this evening asking if the EN-8500 will have DVI, how big it is, and how much $ it will go for.

I'll report back tomorrow when I get a response.

Yep i already know! I saw a nice 19 inch LCD viewsonic i think it was that was using this new LCD Technology a long while back. Only drawback was price 🙁

I bet it still costs you an arm and a leg to buy this stuff in November. I'm estimating something like $1200 for a 15" monitor with FFD technology.

Do they finally able to make red, RED?
All LCD has this issue, NONE able to display red in true red......more of orangish? (is there such word? 😉 )

/me wonders how much is good tech, and how much is marketing hype

FF just speeds up response time right? My planar already looks fine in games, just needs better black

All it requires is a change in the controller, not the lcd itself according to that article. Here's what they say:

One key factor about FFD is that it does not require any special manufacturing techniques or changes in structure or material for the LCD panels. It exists completely in the controller circuitry. As a result, it does not have any impact on production yields or panel development, which is important in the LCD manufacturing industry

I read that as it shouldn't cost much more to make them with FFD.

The new unit will be analog only. It is an 18" unit that will go for about $699.

That's a very nice price. Unfortunately it has no DVI, but a nice price nonetheless!

I wouldn't expect prices with this technology to go up much since it is just a change in the controller and not the LCD. I would expect this technology to permeate most LCDs once it gets rolling for a very small premium. It's more of a technological realization than change that just so happens to be a nice leap. 🙂

Speeding up the response time is always good. Maybe LCDs will become viable gaming monitors when using in conjunction with FFD technology. Some are now, but not compared to a good CRT monitor.

Well this was my last big holdout on buying an LCD...I've been waiting since last September. And finally production has ramped up enough and prices come down enough for me to consider replacing my 19" with a panel. Very very ppphat.

I would say the current crop is fairly good..........UT2K3 plays fine on my LCD........
but yeah...it could be slightly better.....They are still not that good with light backgrounded games......
for example. the swords in the NOLF 2 demo do trail....

It could well be that FFD Technology has already been introduced especially with the current crop of LCD.....the marketeers just decided not to market it.....

Never been impressed by reds or blacks on those flat screens. I'll stick with the tubes until they come down significantly in price on 19" and larger models.
