For more years than I can count my wife has been happier than a pig in shit with a giant 20"
crt monitor that she got cheap. And in her eyes, 800x600 resolution is nirvana, exceed that and she bitches.

Well all good things come to an end, and now her monitor is screwing up big time. Likely something in the picture tube, the color balance is way off even if the monitor still semi functions. Bottom line, its may be repairable, but not economically worth it.

Nor will my wife accept any downgrade in monitor size, its 20" or more or bust. Nor will my wife accept a resolution of greater than 800x600. And my wife's computer is further delimited by having a VGA rather than any dvi connector options.

The last time I studied any LCD options, any LCD monitors of that size had far too high native resolutions to meet any 800x 600 requirements, but I now ask, are there any now that would make my wife happy again now?

none of them will be 800x600 native, obviously. I suppose if she prefers it, just let her run a 1680x1050 or whatever monitor at 800x600 (or maybe at 840x525?)

Seems to me youre in luck. People want to get rid of large CRTs. They are found in the for sale ads (see Craigs List & news papers & local computer magazine ads such as Computor Edge). In fact, I saw a nice 21" NEC Multisync sitting on the sidewalk with a free sign on it during one of my walks just a few weeks ago. Used to use one myself at work & I would have taken it, but they weigh about 50 pounds.

as you say, modern lcd monitors will be nowhere near 8x6 crt pixel pitch.

about all you can do is get a 720p tv with vga inputs and see if the ppi is close enough for your wife. the largest cheap 720p sets are usually around 20-23".

But what performance hits do I get running at a non native resolution?

You won't get any performance hits from running in non native resolution, only from running a resolution greater than 800x600...

As I recall, for LCD you will get the best effect when running non-native if you use an integer multiple of the display's native resolution. For 800x600 then, you would want a UXGA (4:3) 1600 x 1200 native display that you would drive at the 800 x 600.

You might like the PLANAR PX212M

The screen is a little more blurry, that's it.

Just get her another CRT as suggested before. You won't be able to get the same results with LCD, and other options are 3-4 times as expensive as your typical LCD.

Why does she prefer 800x600? If it is text/icon size, you can increase the size of everything and keep a higher resolution. LCD + 1680x1050 with 150% fonts may work good for her.

Or check out Craigslist for 21" CRTs, as stated above, you may find one for free that would work good for her.

heinously low res.
she obviously doesn't know what she's missing or talking about so do this.
windows vista or 7 has excellent gui/text scaling, set the windows scaling to a very large setting and even on a very high resolution monitor everything wiill be ginormous like on a low resolution monitor, but with fine lines, instead of a pixelated mess.

anyways, is she legally blind? 800x600? egads.

running a lcd non native is hideous, kinda undermines your purchase right there. so don't do it.

is her desk setup so the monitor is ridiculously far away or something?

get her eyes checked first. then do as suggested and just get a 1080P LCD and blow up the text with the text scaling. There is literally no reason to even try and run 800x600, it looks so bad on modern LCD's.

Ask her why she doesn't like the higher resolutions. Such a low resolution is a pain in the ass to use for anything.. the only reason I could see using it would be if your eyes were terrible. If that's the case, you can adjust the the DPI to a larger setting. This will adjust everything on the screen to be larger, not just the font size.

I suppose I owe this forum an update, but somehow I changed the crt monitor resolution to another value and then back to 800x600. And somehow in that process, the dozen year old monitor is back to displaying correct color again. One week and counting so far.

Thus allowing my wife to kick the can down the road for awhile as long as correct color lasts. But still my wife and I learned much from this thread. But still, if my wife ever has to replace that old crt monitor, we both agree the replacement will be a lcd monitor, even if she has to settle for non native resolution.

Not me, not you, not anyone can speak for my wife's eyes. Take my wife, someone, anyone, take my wife.

What about a 32" 720p TV for a monitor running @ native 1280x720? Everything will look even bigger than 20" @800x600, cost about $350, and have tv tuner built-in. Heck, I bought a 32" 1080p Vizio TV for ~$360 on sale almost a year ago.
