New Law In California

Senate Bill 1290: Requires self-defense for middle and high school students to be added to physical education classes once curriculum frameworks are revised. (Sen. Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego)

We took self defense classes in either Freshman or Sophomore year of high school back in the 70's.
It was mostly Judo style moves and how to defend against knife attacks.

I wonder what it will be now? How to raise a bullies self esteem?

Doesn't make sense considering that actually defending yourself against bullying will get you the same penalty as the bully will receive.

If you can't defend yourself against gangs with AK-47s you're not learning anything valuable.

QFT, just stay inside the muzzle length.

Anyway before we move forward on this kind of crap parents have to accept Little Johnny is just fail at life and will continue getting his ass kicked until death.

Shame your parents didn't get the memo before the 2nd trimester was up.

That is basically what I was thinking except I was trying to wrap my head around the logic of teaching someone to take a gun away from an assailant just to become a criminal by possession in the process.

I thought it was a new oldsmoboat law..anything potentially positive posted by oldsmoboat will be accompanied by sarcastic cynicism.

When I was in either 7th or 8th grade ('97/'98) we had this. Basically it was how to deliver a straight blow to the nose while yelling "NO!", how to get out of basic choke holds from people attacking you from behind, and a few others.

I don't agree with this at all. I could defend myself from an attack when I was young, however; I was trained to do that. (that said I just didn't defend).

Today if you try to defend and are successful, chances are his fellow hoodrats are going to jump on you and stomp your head (which probably would have happened anyway).

This is just an excuse because our teachers don't want to be involved anymore.

As a teacher you are in a life-changing career.

Yeah in a super PC ultra liberal state like California, I foresee many lawsuits resulting from any kind of training like that in public schools.

I can see the con argument now:
What, teach them self defense? If we do that, all they'll do is fight all the time.

Wait...out of 725 new laws taking effect today, you picked that one to ridicule?

MANY of the new laws are pretty inoffensive and make sense...
For example, (pay attention potheads) as of today, possession of marijuana is now a civil offense, subject to a $100 fine with no criminal record or jail time. It's not quite legalized...but at least it's decriminalized.
