New Laptop

Hi Folks,

Buying a new laptop as the old one is dying. Is there a good program out there that will transfer the programs (MS Office Pro, Photoshop, etc.) and personal files from the old to the new? Both machines are Vista.

Download the trial version, clone/backup your HD to the ext HD, then reclone the external HD to your new machine.

IIRC, Vista has some native backup features, but you need an ext HD (just borrow one)

for files, get a usb drive. those are relatively cheap.

for programs, assuming you bought the software, then why not use the cds to install them on the new laptop?

That is OK if you don't have a lot of programs and customizations therein. In My case, that is a 3-day operation. Migration between two Vista machines should not be that difficult. Take a look at Microsoft Migration Tools 3.0.

If there are not too many programs, a fresh software install is not bad - then the data files can be copied directly (USB crossover link) or via external media.
