I'm in the market for a new laptop that has respectable performance without having to sell the farm to be able to afford it...thus...a x800 or 6800 mobile are out of the question. I can't seem to find a direct comparision of the the x700 vs. the 9700 mobile gaphics any place. So..what's the communities opinion?

You can use Tom's hardware to get a good idea.

FarCry same tests. Looks like X700 is a tad faster.

Here is PCI-E showing performance of X700 "Pro" = 45.1 fps
NVIDIA's nForce4-SLI chipset, an AMD Athlon64 4000+ and 1GB of RAM.

" Note: The test system used for this comparison is markedly faster than the one we used in the previous version of the VGA Charts. Faster CPU, memory interface, chipset and newer versions of the cards' graphics drivers all result in much higher scores."

Here is AGP showing 9700 = 30.6fps
Pentium 4 3.2 GHz CPU and 1GB RAM.

should probably subtract 10% for mobile.

Note that the X700 Pro is in a much faster state of the art system than the 9700 tested.
I would "guess" that in a weaker system like the P4 used to test the 9700, the X700 non-Pro would have scored mid 30's.

As a side note, I run FarCry with 1.8GHz Pentium M, 512meg, 128meg mr9700 at 1440x900x32 max quality and detail settings flawlessly. HL2 same res and near same quality, details and results. mr9700 is more than capable to run anything thrown at it. X700 should be just as good if not better.

Just as an FYI the Mobile 9700 is really a desktop 9600XT w/ only 4 pipes, so be aware it performs more like a 9600XT than a 9700Pro on the desktop, the X700 is an 8 pipeline card so should perform better than the mobile 9700.
