New laptop: Windows 8.1 to 8.1

Hey everyone,

I was curious what the best method (in your opinion) is for getting as close as possible to your former configuration on an old laptop when going to a new one. My current laptop is on Windows 8.1, and I'll be purchasing a new gaming laptop and running 8.1 on it as well. Windows settings, games, etc. Also, the quickest way. Windows easy transfer? Use a hard drive? Any recommendations? Thanks!

8.1 should save a lot of your Windows related settings in the cloud already. I generally prefer to do a fresh install including applications.

My vote is for Windows Easy Transfer. It'll get your settings and documents, while you are responsible for getting the programs themselves installed.

I ditto this vote. Used it for the first time migrating things from the desktop I just moved up from to the one I am on now. I was happily impressed!!!!

Windows Easy Transfer is gone in Windows 8.1.

It seems they expect you to use a Combo of File History and Sky Drive Sync.

Seriously? WTF Microsoft?

I was pissed too. I upgraded from Preview version of 8.1 then was like well might as well clean install.

All Easy Transfer does is offer to restore previous backups made from previous versions of Windows! So 8 and below.

This does suck as this was such an easy tool to use when clean installing a PC.

Now they want to sync your Windows Account settings and use File History for backups.

Ugh.

.

I responded to your other post in software but will put it here too as well

It's not gone. I just doubled checked both my upgrade from 8 to 8.1 and my clean install of 8.1 and it is there on both.

I hit search and type in Windows Easy and it popped up

or if you want you can hit start -> run type in migwiz and that will start it too

It can only accept transfers from earlier versions of Windows however. You cannot use it to transfer files and settings from Windows 8.1.🙁

Like I said in my last post: "All Easy Transfer does is offer to restore previous backups made from previous versions of Windows! So 8 and below."

It will not offer to backup your Usernames & files like it did in previous versions.

I see now, I did not fully read what the post said and what WET said.
Thats what I get for posting half asleep

Wow. How lame can MS get? Thankfully, Ballmer is out of there, I hear.
