Hey guys, this is the first post for me. Previously I only read the anandtech fourms, but maybe now I can help out. In any case, I have a question:

I am trying to find or build a laptop. Mostly I expect it to be for just text editing. However, I would like to be able to play dvds with it so that I am not restricted to my dorm room while watching movies (annoying roomates :p ). I have built several desktops... I was just wondering... What is dvd playback dependent on? Ultimately i need to know what I can get away with in regards to graphics card and processor.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Over 6 years ago I was watching DVD movies (full screen, no dropped frames or stuttering) on an old laptop with a P3 500/128MB ram/8MB ATI Rage Mobility using PowerDVD & WinDVD. I hope this helps your quest for a laptop. :)

yes. actually that makes me smile inside :) It means there are strong prospects of being able to spend only 300 or so on ebay. Thanks. If anyone knows anything else, i would appreciate a quick reply.

You could pick up any of the $299 laptops on Black Friday and be good to go.

Or Office Depot has one for $379 after rebtates, or Wal-mart has a $399 one in-store only with no rebates and no getting up at 5 AM :)

Someone at GottaDeal.com bought the wal-mart and liked it, the specs look good on paper.

New with a 1-year warranty is worth paying a bit extra for compared to eBay.

That laptop (V5305WM) was only available for purchase from Nov 5 to 11. I bought one and flipped it on eBay since the battery life was poor. I don't see anymore sub $500 laptops at in their BF ads either. :( Your best best is either wait in line @ BB or buy the Compaq v3000z available from HP.com for $399

Here's the link to get it
