New Laptop - now to benchmark & test it?

I have a new laptop - there doesn't apepar to be any problems with it, no dead pixels or bad sound. It there any software I can employ - freeware - that will check the rest of the system, for instance - firewire port - I don't have a firewaire device - so how do I know it is working?
