Paul Thurrott Opines On Windows Service Packs

Interesting notes and rants from Paul. Absolutely worth a read...

Microsoft will ship Windows Vista SP1 concurrently with Longhorn Server in Q3 2007 and SP1 will include a major kernel update for Vista......The company has completely abandoned Windows XP, and it has absolutely no plans to ever ship an XP SP3...And it really freaks me out. It should freak you out as well.

what will be changed?

Doesn't mean anything.

SP5 for Win2k was being worked on and had a provisional release date. It never came. Win2k was abandonned before its release and the SP5 project scrapped.

I didn't think that Microsoft was going to make SP3 anything other than a patch rollup, anyway. Which would be fine in my book. XP really needs a patch rollup.

It's weird why they just don't release one. Nobody expects any new XP features at this point. Vista is released. All of those XP patches have been already been distributed and installed on millions of PCs. Every new PC that's built requires all the patches to be installed anyway, on top of SP2. What's the big deal with putting all the patches in one bundle? I'd guess it's all about deciding which Hotfixes to include in the Service Pack, and testing those.

Agreed.
I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a hotfix rollup for XP instead of a full SP3.

And to the OP regarding Vista kernel changes; from Paul Thurrott's site:
"Microsoft will ship Windows Vista SP1 concurrently with Longhorn Server in Q3 2007 and SP1 will include a major kernel update for Vista that will bring the client OS up to speed with the version of the Windows kernel in Longhorn Server."
I guess they'll include some features that were originally cut from Vista due to time constraints.

That's all a SP should be anyway. Adding new software and features to a SP is retarded.

And regarding the the "new kernel" in Vista SP1, it won't be a new kernel. MS makes changes to their kernel whenever necessary, just about every NT SP has had kernel updates so why should the first Vista SP be any different?
