i'm a java developer in nyc debating if i should consider contract work. the market's kinda fierce right now and it looks like contrators are getting the axe left and right...

i don't know what to think
i gues that if you do contracting for a small and solid company (ie the one I will work for ) with a good list of clients
it should be pretty good.
Consultants are getting axed from the big consulting firms.

o i c. I thought you were like a direct contractor or independent consultant. Working for a consulting company offers a bit more stability. So why the move from florida to ny? Did they really offer alot more money? The weather here's pretty cold...

pretty good salary,
great oportunity
plus i will still have a place in SOBE (aka South beach) to go on the week ends 🙂 when it's too cold up here,
and I was starting to be tired of working for a dot com and the job market in Miami sucks.
Plus I Love NYC 🙂

Is there a demand for the IT professionals in NYC?? I'm in the west coast and would relocate if there are oppurtunities.

I found my job with contacts (not online)
It's much easier this way...
you guys wait a few months and i will keep everybody posted to see if I can help anybody out up here
cheers

kh3443 - i would not relocate unless you had a guaranteed thing. There is always demand in nyc but its definitely very low. There's like 100s of people available for a given position, albeit alot of them suck. We were looking to hire on a developer a while back and went through interviewing like 20 people. Like 16 of them had been out of work for months and 2 were out of work for over 6 months. Unfortunately, all of them sucked - if we had found the right person, we would have hired him/her.

Rates have gone down drastically as well - positions that used to pay 80-120 an hour are now being peddled for 35-70...

Wall st. (along with IT companies) was especially hard hit - so I know alot of people out of work in nyc.
