New Job w/ higher Pay and no benefits,

So I was basically promised a job today if I wanted it. The pay would be $73k/year, but there wouldn't be any benefits.

In the job I am at now, I get paid $47k and get lots of benefits (401k, sick days, health insurance, pension, etc, etc). The job I am at now is also fairly stressful at times.

What do you think, should I take the new job or keep the one I got?

those benefits come in REAL handy when you break your leg and what not

its kind of a hard choice

Depends.

Do you take advantage of 401k? Do they price match contributions?

Do you get sick? This may be odd...but I never get sick. I REALLY would like to cash my sick hours.

Is it possible to buy health insurance just for emergencies? Or do you take a ton of prescription drugs and need the drug care?

What's the cost of living difference between the two areas?

another idea- work part time some where like home depot just enough to get benefits

and why doesn't this company offer benefits?

I do take advantage of the 401k, they offer a match of the first 5% you put in.

I get sick maybe once or twice a year.....I have been working there for a few years, and have a month of sick leave built up. I can't cash it in.

I'm only 22 so health insurance isn't too big of an issue right now, though it will be when I get older and maybe start a family.

Cost of living is the same - same commuting area within the same organization.

benefits could be around 400 bucks a month for health/dental/life/disability.

Even then that's un 5K a year post tax and can be deducted.
 

Realistically the pension benefit isn't anything to hang your hat on.
The health benefits depend on how much you pay out of pocket. 401K is nice, but money can easily be invested in other areas.
Sick days are usually state labor laws, so they don't mean much.

Do all of your benefits come out to more than 26K? If not, then your new job option may be a good avenue to explore.

also the first 2 years would be a contract type deal. I have not negotiated about the subsequent years that follow.

How secure are both of these jobs? Any risk of losing either anytime soon? You don't want to be left with no job AND no benefits.

I can't believe the numbers you put because just a month ago I was in the EXACT same position. My job at that time paid $46k and the other company offered $73k with NO benefits at all and also NO bonuses. The pay rise would only be when my billing rate increases (even if I perform excellent but my work exp doesn't deserve a billing rate increase I wouldn't get any pay raise). Even with these things I was about to accept the $73k offer because it was still coming out better at the end. Lucky me another company offered me $58k with all benefits (Health ins, dental, vision, 401k, 3wk vac, 6sick day, 3 personal days, 6mnthly bonus, annual pay review with min increase = inflation) and I took that.
