You would think the gas station/store owners would want self service. Then the customer would have to come in the store and pay. While inside the store they purchase drinks, smoke, chips, etc.

What he said. While I don't think going self-service is as big a danger/inconvenience as people seem to make it out to be (and yes, there are some really stupid things said in that article), the effect it's going to have on gas prices is less than minimal. Self-service is not the answer to the high gasoline prices.Originally posted by: Ramma2
Why are we taking action to reduce the cost of gas 2-5 cents a gallon. It's gone up over a fvcking dollar recently. OH YES 2 CENTS A GALLON WHOOOO.

I grew up in Oregon, & moved ~2 years ago to PA.
I have no idea what would make people think that pumping their own gas is a privilege.
I would MUCH rather let someone else pump my gas. I like my warm (or cool), dry car thank you very much.

How would they know what to do?
What a crazy, untested idea.

expecially PA alchohol ones...
Don't get me started on that.
In Oregon you can buy alcohol in grocery stores, & even hard liquor in a few test stores (they were just starting that when I left, no idea how it turned out).
Freaking PA makes you go to three different stores if you want beer, vodka, and a loaf of bread.

Bill Dressler, executive director of the New Jersey Gasoline Retailers Association and Allied Trades, says there are safety concerns. While attendants are trained, many motorists would be novices. "It could be put in the wrong container," says Dressler, whose group represents about 2,200 of the state's 3,800 gas stations. There could be "somebody getting out and smoking and they didn't turn the engine off."

Obligatory joke::
A woman is driving through Lincoln, Nebraska and decides to stop for gas. Finally after finding a gas station in middle of hay-stacks, she enters the gas station and waits for magic to happen.
The gas station is observeing her all the time. Finally he comes out and says, "Lady, either you must be a widow from Florida or lived your whole life in New Jercy"
Bam. 😀

I wonder more how you would find ppl whose job decription is: pump gas. That job surely cant pay more than 1$/hr - even brooming the street seems more interesting

i've seen people from NJ get outta their cars and stare at the pumps for like 5 min...... i could imagine elderly people just stranded at home because they are too afraid to stop at the gas station and figure it out

I believe it would lower the cost of operating a gas station. You can't deny that labor is usually a huge part of business expense. As for not knowing how to pump gas, anyone who is licensed to drive a vehicle should have the ability to learn how in 30 seconds. (Or take the Gas Station Attendant Training Seminar.
Just admit that it has devolved into a jobs program 😛
The stupid thing about this is that people should care more about this when gas prices are LOW (when the worker salary represents a larger percentage of the total). When gas prices are high it becomes a (relative) bargain.
I've never pumped gas for a living but I would imagine that a pump attendant pumps several hundred gallons per hour. When they're making minimum wage or thereabouts ($7.05 or something like that in Oregon) that's just a few cents per gallon.
It's definitely a jobs program, but until you've lived it don't knock it - Pumping your own gas is a nuisance.

I live in California and could concur with the safety thing. Many times as I pull into a gas station, I see a bunch of idiots either still on their cell phone or SMOKING WHILE PUMPING GAS. Now if each gas pump had it's own supply and was sealed off from everyone else, I could care less that they blow their asses up. But man, pumping gas next to them pisses and freaks me out. Other than that I think NJ's gas thing is full of doo doo.
