Since when did Apple start making the hard drives in their IPods? Replacing the existing hard drive that someone else made for them with a same form factor larger capacity hard drive that again someone else made for them isn't some engineering marvel by Apple. Any company can buy the same drives and put them in their players if they want.
Man, that sounds easy to do. Now why again is it that Dell only has a 30GB player?
It is easy to do. that's why my rio karma has a 60gb hdd(so easy to do that i modded it myself[took all of 30 minutes]), plays wma,mp3,flac,and ogg, has gapless palyback, 17hours fo playback time on 1 charge, came with a dock with rca audio out, usb in, ethernet and ac adapter. and all this cost me about $350. I also get 5 band parametric eq, carry pouch and sennheiser mx300 premium headphones. what do you get for $450 but a color screen and a usb cable huh?
it's not even that i dont like the i-pod, i think it's a great style statement as well as a good player but the way your arrogant fanboy replies made me do this.
edit: as for the value, face it, apple ALWAYS charges that little bit more for their sense of style and because you cant price stuff as low as the competitior due to economies of scale. No apple product in recently memory is faster or better than a pc component at similar cost. look at the i-mac mini.
last gen 1.42ghz chip, 80gig 5400rpm hdd, 256mb ram: $600
my sig machine (computer with keyboard and mouse only, no monitor): $600
