Pretty much what happened was it was suppose to ship UPS but they gave it to FedEx. When FedEx returned it, it was already out of stock/delisted, so they automatically did an RMA.
What I don't get is why they didn't try to just re-send it through UPS?

it is standard procedure and policy with almost any company that ships items to always do a full refund (with no restocking fee) automatically upon receipt of a non delivered good.

So what's current availability for these drives? Any chance of ordering one within a couple of weeks?

When they do become available I doubt I will getting one from NewEgg. No reason to reward bad service.

yea, newegg put a "no returns policy" on all versions of the intel X25... pulled the G2, and then managed to sell all their remaining G1 stock... they were NOT sold out when the G2 came out... they sold out of G1 @ 310$ a pop AFTER the G2 came out.
I think that is the real reason they deactivated it, people in a flurry to order it from newegg accidently ordered the wrong drive version for 300$

eh... they have a standard return policy. Knowing they results to such tricks just means you have to read carefully on any item you buy... but you should be doing that anyways. It is not illegal, it is not immoral, it is a breach of trust and poor customer service.
It is also one of many things newegg does.

People that spend hundreds of dollars without understanding what they're buying deserve what they get. Reading is not that hard.

Argh!! I purchased an Intel 34nm 160GB from newegg on Thursday and now they gave me an RMA. Looks like they sold me an item that they did not have on stock...

There's an issue with setting a BIOS password that they're fixing with a firmware update. They're not shipping any more drives until that is resolved (shouldn't be long), and I guess for whatever reason they didn't want vendors to sell anymore yet either. It's really a non-issue, though.

but checking the link for a return policy on each item to see if that specific item deviates from the standard and is a trap is not something you would normally expect to do. Frys, bestbuy, etc, don't have such policy

I quess I'll have to wait until they're available... I was really looking foward in getting this bad boy. 🙂

it is only a non issue if you know about the issue.. anyone who sets a bios password and then changes it will find all his data was lost! It is a very good approach for them to take.

Everyone who buys the latest hardware knows that you are the guinea pig for people that follow. What people say about cars is true for computers. Buying the latest model is usually only a good idea if you really can't afford to wait.

You're right, it is...just probably not the approach that most on this forum would prefer, since we are all anxiously awaiting our drives and are educated about them.

I agree, it's sneaky and underhanded if that's what newegg really did. And that is not the kind of customer service you want a reputable company giving its customers. Saying that it's legal doesn't change anything. Lawyers spend their whole careers doing legal things. And believe me, lots of what they do is sneaky and underhanded! 😉

I guess I'm still not seeing the issue. Almost every SSD on newegg is only covered by the "Limited Replacement Only Return Policy", and always has been. It is clearly laid out on the product page and when you go to checkout your order.

mmm, this does apply to other SSD models too... SSDs have the "limited replacement only return policy" while almost every other item is "standard replacement policy".

I just wish that somebody, somewhere, was selling these. The 80s went so fast on Newegg.

I could care less about the bios password bug. If you're buying SSDs for almost $3/GB, chances are you know how to install a new firmware in a week or two.

Anybody have any idea when availability is supposed to start coming back?

I wouldn't say that: they don't normally change the hardware, just the firmware and drivers. So buying now rather than later is a good idea if the current value of the new technology outweighs the current risks of bugs and the inconvenience of updating.

Try to explain THAT to people on AT.
I posted about AMD's lacking/horrible/buggy support for AHCI and almost got lynched but the crowd here.
