New Insurance Institute offset crash tests; Ram and Impreza score impressive marks

Just saw on Headline News. Here's the info directly from the website:

<< Impreza is top-rated small car: The occupant compartment of the Subaru Impreza maintained its shape extremely well in the offset test, and the dummy's movement was well controlled. All measures recorded on the dummy indicated low risk of injury. "This was a very good performance," O'Neill says >>

<< Dramatic improvement in Ram pickup design: The performance of the predecessor 2001 Ram was poor. There was significant intrusion into the occupant compartment and poor control of dummy movement during the offset test. The airbag deployed late, which contributed to high head and neck injury measures. In contrast, the new Ram design is a good performer. Nine of 10 measures of intrusion and steering wheel movement are dramatically lower (better): >>

These figures now place the Ram ahead of the Silverado and F-150.

<< imprezzas kick ass >>

Yeah, they do. But they suffer from suck-ass-interioritis like the Altima 😉

True but when i'm racing down the highway at 280 mph it doesn't matter!

280MPH my ass!! McLaren F1's don't even go that fast 😉

Besides, interior quality is one of things that I really pay attention to in a car. I don't slam my car 0-60 in record time or swing through the slalom at .9 on a constant basis. But I do like to sit in a nice comfortable, quality interior as that's where I spend all of my time in a car. It's like getting your clothes from clearance rack at K-Mart instead of American Eagle or The Gap 😉

I know they don't - hence the reason I said imprezzas kick ass!!

Now they just need to crash the Ram into the Impreza (or vice versa) to really test to see which one is the most impressive! 😀

That's good news.

Although some manufacturers says this is a test that doesn't reflect real world crashes, looks like they still design their cars to pass this test (and probably brag about it if they do pass. 🙂)

THey all say that when they fail miserably (like Ford with the F-150). Then when their cars does well, they start sucking the II's $&!@#😉

I was just browsing through the ratings and the new Ford Explorer is now rated a "Best Pick", where as the '95-'01 models were merely acceptable. I'd say Ford get's an at-a-boy for that.

Wouldn't it be nice if Volkswagens were as reliable as Hondas and Toyotas? I'd be in hog heaven: a beautiful, classy interior matched with long-lasting mechanicals (at an accessible price). Unfortunately, VWs aren't exactly the epitamy of quality and reliability. Reliability comes before interior quality though the latter is still a very important characteristic, which is why I buy Hondas. Honda, while not in the same class as VW, is often used as a mainstream benchmark for interior design and execution. Toyota tends to veer into boring design (Camry) or a little too Pontiac-esque in plastics feel (Celica).

Toyota and Honda are equal in interior quality to me. Honda tends to be more "sporty" exterior wise though. The interior in the lastest camry and highlander are butta 😉 Beats anything chevy or pontiac has to offer.

Ok....Ram....duh.....that's like saying "tractor trailers and buses have been scoring exceptionally well lately against VW beetles..." But the impreza? Now that's imprezzive.

Compared to what it did in 2001, it's great. The old Ram did POORLY, as did the F-150. Check the site for stats
