New install Win 2000 Pro or XP RPo

Question for yall...
I currently have window 2000 Pro on both my desktop and my wife's lap top. I have a copy of XP Pro I got in school 2 years ago but have never installed. I am currently upgrading my desktop and wonder which operating system I should install. I have had very few if an problems with Win2K, so my question is, what wwould I really be gaining by going with XP Pro? Will it (XP) cause problems trying to network with my lap top if it has win2K?

New system: (most likely)
MSI Neo2 Platinum MB (939)
Athlon64 3200+
Mushkin PC3200 Blue 2x512MG
PNY GeForce 6800
Maxtor 300GB SATA 7200rpm, 16mb cache
Maxtor 200GB ATA/133 (ide)
Lite on CDR/W and Lite on DVDR/W (4x)
Antec Sonata
Samsung 955 DF 19" CRT

Usesof my system:
Surfin the net
Gaming (UT2004, DoomIII, FarCry etc..)
Photo editing
Presentations
Viewing digital X-rays

Any help would be appreciated.

 
Truthfully, I haven't had any issues with XP, it is the more stable OS. 2k is stable, but I did have the occasional problem with it. I have not had a single BSOD with XP. Software has a harder time killing windows now too because it seems to bounce back from a critical error with ease.

Don't go to WinXP unless it has something you need.
WinXP with the latest SP is still bad mouthed by lots of people that I talk to,
especially video guys....

Since he is upgrading It isn't really an "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" situation. In reality from a hardware perspective the existing win2k install being compared to a potential new XP Pro install on basically a complete new build is an Apples and Oranges comparison. I would based on my personal experiences with both OSs and newer hardware go with Win XP Pro and SP2. The Athlon 64 Cpu also has some features that require winxp SP 2 to take advantage of. Like the NX bit that is supposed to offer hardware protection against buffer overflow exploits. A lot of people like to pan Xp SP2 but I have had zero issues with it on approximately 20 installs that i have used it on.
 
Thanks guys for all of the replies, but I was looking for stuff like NesuD gave. Reasons to go to XP, not just a vote (sorry).
Anyone have any other reasons to step up (features and benefits).
Also, will I have trouble getting a win2K system to network with the XP system. I don't reall want to wipe my laptop and reinstall the OS.

Networking them shouldn't be a big deal. I have done it many times with no issues.
Another thing to consider is newer security and multimedia features aside XP is not all that much different from 2000. If you are more comfortable with the 2000 gui then that is available in XP and you still get the improved features.

Some features that come to mind although I haven't thought about it in so long that i am probably forgetting a bunch.
Native cd writing capability
New Gui Or Classic win2k gui
Enhanced ICS and firewall features with SP2 including the new security center that nags you like your ex wife if there is anything not up to muster in your A/V, Firewall, or windows security updates.
Support for the NX bit hardware security feature in Athlon 64
Lots of consumer oriented multimedia features that i can't remember most of right now.

I would suggest you test fly it for a couple of weeks and see if it is worth it to you. If you don't like it you can always nuke the install and install 2k.

winxp's best feature not available on win2k is the ability to write and rewrite to cd's from Windows Explorer. it can also erase when using CD-RW's. it's a very handy utility for copying files to cd's.
 
i recently tryed XP for the second time as everyone has always given me crap about still running 2k....
but going from 2k to xp gave me nothing but a bunch of corrupt files.... (and yes both os's were installed on ntfs)
i installing xp caused a checkdsk that "repaired" about 200gb of my media files.... what it actually did was corrupt them so that they could no longer be played.... or corrupt them so that a movie files played a bunch of random mp3's.. i was forced to delete most of these files... but luckaly.. a select few Windows2000 repaired when i coverted back to 2k....
2k is what i am running now and it is what i am sticking with untill the next OS is released...
the only advantage i recieved from XP (other than getting F'ed ni the A) was a much faster boot time. other than that windows 2000 actually runs all my aplications faster...

not to mention Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City Oklahoma has suffered simmilar problems with their conversion from 2000 to XP.

so if its not the OS? then what is causing people (not just myself) to have this problem?

if a perticular OS has a problem with hardware... sounds more like an OS issue to me....
multiple computers having same problem? i just dont see that as hardware..

It could be a lot of things: IDE cable, bad ram, crappy PSU... Bad ram seems to be fairly common, and plenty of people buy those $12 PSUs.

if it is all media files, it is probably XP's piracy protection measures (forget what MS calls it).
 
so Corsiar XMS3200LLPT Ram causes windows to show a black screen that say it is "Fixing" your files for about 20 minutes? and then you Get F'ed on the next restart when your metallica DVD rip starts playing a Dirty Dancing right in the middle of kirk's Solo.... ?

If the ram is bad, it could definitely happen. Do you think every chip Corsair puts out is good?
 
Or was it my Zalman 400w PSU along with Enermax 550w PSU in a Dual PSU setup that wasent giving me suffishent/clean power?
imo.... Windows XP was a waste of $130 of my money.
