I had run DD-WRT since December of 2006. Had some recent connection issues with iPhone 4s devices, WPA2 Personal, and AES. The phones would not reliably stay connected. Lappy had no issues. I got tired of fighting it, and frankly there's some weird shit going on at dd-wrt HQ: "Don't trust the database of supported hardware, believe this thread." Uhh, whatever. So I switched to Tomato 1.28 last night.

I took a few minutes, configuring everything: wireless security (same as before WPA2 Personal with AES), setting up a wireless MAC whitelist, bandwidth monitor with local storage of reports, etc. I immediately noticed faster bandwidth, which shocked me. Almost 20% more down and 25% more upload. Nice.

I tried to visit the admin page (192.168.3.1) of the router tonight, and nothing. The IP is the same as it was with dd-wrt, if that matters. IE9, Chrome, and Firefox all cannot load the admin page. Just rebooted machine. No luck. Internet access is not affected. Static IP and DNS on this machine.

Any ideas?

Might be that it is a Good time to honor the new 21st century and get a new Router.

Not to derail the thread, but would you be willing to elaborate on this a little bit? I'm having an eerily similar issue with my new Asus RT-N16. My iPhone 4s just keeps dropping its wifi connection randomly and wont pick it back up unless I manually go into the wifi settings and reconnect it or hit "renew lease". It works fine on every other wifi network it regularly connects to.

The RT-N16 uses a DDWRT derivative, I was going to put the full version on there but if DDWRT is the *cause* of the problem...

Which build? I assume you turned on DHCP, since some of them now default to it off for some reason.

Oh wait, another default is that you can't log on over wireless. Are you plugged in via ether and not a bridge?

I'm sure a 30-30-30 reset would work, but would that be just a band-aid?
Need a full NVRAM clear after switching firmwares. If you haven't already done a 30/30/30 it might clear some gremlins remaining from your previous install.

Which version of Tomato? Many different variants out there now. I would suggest: http://www.linksysinfo.org/index.php?forums/tomato-firmware.33/ Lots of info there.

I think mine here is using a Toastman version (with Openvpn), another one elsewhere that is connected over VPN is using a different 1.28 mod, also VPN compatible though. Which doesn't help, just wanted to share :p

I didn't realize there were more versions. I'm using the one found here:

http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato#notes

Tomato_1_28.zip

edit: Now that I'm able to access the admin page again, the complete version is: 1.28.1816

Before trying Tomato, I upgraded DD-WRT to 24 sp2 std (IIRC), because that was where I found out about all the weird stuff going on at dd-wrt. Anyway, I did the 30-30-30 reset moving from one dd-wrt version to another, but not from dd-wrt to Tomato. I'll try it right now.

Awww. Sad panda... :'(
Heh, it's true. N speed is really nice, and not even expensive any more.

Anyway, there has been a lot of work done on Tomato since Jon Z's official 1.28 -- a lot of it to support new routers with USB, N, the 5ghz band, etc. but also adding features that have been backported to the WRT54, including ipv6. The main current builds are Shibby and Toastman, though Victek is very nice for the limited models he supports.

A few weeks after I begrudgingly updated to iOS 6, I would notice the display showing 3G instead of the wifi bars. That's weird, as my router and all wireless devices ever connected to it have been super stable. I shrugged it off for a while, then I realized connection issues seemed to be related to times of high (3.2-3.7MB/s) incoming bandwidth use. I throttled it back, and that seemed to keep the connection stable. But then I got annoyed. Things should just *work*, ya know?

Installed a newer version of DD-WRT, even after being shocked at what appears to be lack of any leadership at the official site. But after a week or so, I decided to try Tomato. Besides the increase in speed, I like the lack of bullshit at Tomato's site.

That's it in a nutshell. This is me in a nutshell.

I did the 30-30-30 reset back on the 21st, and after re-configuring it to my preference, the router worked great. Left town yesterday to see Galactic (HIGHLY recommended, btw), then got home tonight to a non-loading admin page. Really sad panda...

I'm gonna pull the power plug for thirty seconds, but maybe I should look at a different build like Shibby? I'm reluctant to toss a perfectly capable router when I don't think I need N speed.

Was this when the devices were locked/idle? I think in iOS 6 they introduced a new "feature" that disconnects your wifi to save power until you wake the device up. Whenever I wake my phone up, it shows the 3G symbol for a few seconds until it reconnects to the wifi, which is normal. I think there's still some bugs with it though, as it does suddenly start dropping in and out even when actively using it until I go into the settings and renew the lease.

Anyway, glad you got your issue sorted.

The wi-fi dropping was during use.
