I am really red in the face on this dam pc.:|

I just was helping this guy that bought this for him mom to do simple stuff.

It's an old P-133 w/32mb of simms, intel mb and I can't get it to see the serial mouse.

I went into the bios,com 1 & 2 are on (AUTO)irqs are good too. (com1=irq4,com2=irq3)
No conflicts, just no mouse, I tried two diff mice, I tried two diff com cables...nada.

What the heck am I missing here, OI feel stupid !! :disgust:

Thx guys.

just a suggestion, if you can get into windows... try checking the system menu in control system, and see if you have a mouse there that is not detecting or that needs drivers... try manually installing the mouse drivers before restarting with the mouse attached... just might do it, ... hope this helps

I`ve had that happen before in the past too... Is the mouse connected to the serial port a true serial mouse??? If not get one... a PS2 conversion will not work for some reason on older board... from what I have found...

Thanks for your reply guys, but it is a real serial mouse and it isn't in the device mngr at all.

But it was a good try though.

Anybody else??

This might seem too simple, but....did you look carefully in the BIOS for a setting that specifies serial or PS2 for the mouse?

Yes, I looked there right away.

Both coms seem normal, both on auto and have irqs that are good too, com1=irq4 & com2=irq3.

There was a setting for ps2 and I believe that it is set to auto.
But I changed it a couple of times to see and no help at all.

But thx for trying.

How old is the computer? Way back, the serial connector was mounted to a slot filler with a short ribbon cable that plugged into the Ma Board. If I remember correctly there were two different types (they looked exactly the same). I ran into 'no mouse' when I had the wrong one connected.

This is off topic but why not do a 98Lite install of 98SE. With that processor and only 32Mb of ram you're trying to push the Queen Mary around with a rowboat. The "micro" install comes in around 72 MB and uses the 95 shell. If $25 is too much then Win3.1?

Are the com port connectors the right ones for the motherboard? A lot of boards have different pin sizes, so even if a connector fits it might not be making contact. Got an add in port card? Or a way to test the port with loop back connectors to make sure it's actually working?

You might try checking the com port connections to the motherboard. AT systems use a back plate with ribbon cables, it's usually pretty tight up in that corner of the board and a connector might be loose. I've seen a few systems where the com ribbon was hooked to the PS2 MB connector, they can only connect to the com headers for oblivious reasons.
If ok there then use the Add/Remove programs applet in the control panel to scan the system for new hardware. If none is found then manually install a serial pointing device.
If all else fails, you could obtain a PS2 back plate(and mouse) and use the PS2 header on the motherboard.
Good luck!

Thx guys...I'll check to be sure.

I think I may have a ISA com port card around here somewhere....

Just seems to suck because its on board...oh well.

I will try and find it.

I don't believe that your going to see the serial mouse in the device manager if its just a msoft type mouse. The 98 system that I did for my GF with a AT mobo doesn't show the mouse at all, but it works fine.
(no drivers other than default were used).

There a good chance that the cables from the mobo to the port are the problem. Different pinouts were used back in the P133 days and the cables could screw you. Also check that pin 1 is on the red stripe.
