Retail price is never a "HOT DEAL".

Can we move this to Hardware or something?

Yeah baby, retail is for suckers.

Apple should sell via multilevel marketing like Amway. Most of their customer base are already deluded zeolots anway. I like to point out that PC users differ in that they do not hesitate to declare MS or Intel sucks just as much as Apple. The most zealous Apple users are the ones accustomed to paying so much that Apple was making 50% + profit on each unit unlike PC buyers.

Vive la difference, I say. Just don't get all preachy about your choice like you need to justify you are "right". Either way you are a just a crawly consumer. :p

[qThanks to aldamon for saving me time on finding a closedminded person so quickly. And I'm sorry that this doesnt fit YOUR criteria for "hot deal", officer. But a heads up is hot to some others sop maybe you should call off the swat team and just chill.[/i] >>

emonkey, my mind is not closed, but my wallet sure is to this "deal."

BTW, there is no such thing as thread crapping in Hot Deals. Show me where I can buy this system right now. If you can't, then this thread should be locked. I'm sorry I guess. Normally I hate it when people "police", but this thread is more mac propaganda than a deal.

Fine.

Although this should be in the IWANNA thread, does anyone know where I can get an entry level DV editing system that can handle real time effects? It needs to also have a flat screen.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!

:Q
Jeez. I've never seen a full grown human act so irrational. It isnt for you, what so hard about that concept. And as for buying it now, then click here my bitter buddy.

But if your argument is that its not hot because its not available this second then I suggest you go wanna-mod the other threads that give previews of weekend ads, heads up on ram prices dropping and clearance items that arent available everywhere. And while your at it, go find a doctor to help you get that crab out of your ass. You really should chill out and stop reading this thread since you obviously cant take the fact that some products may not be suitable for you.

<< I don't measure my importance in this world by my video card. I measure it by my intelligence. And I am smart enough to know that mac people are getting RIPPED OFF. >>

Well, I dont judge people by intelligence. It wouldnt be fair to you.

<< And I do get angry when con artists like Steve Jobs try to rip people off by selling overpriced 2 year old hardware at twice the price. >>

Or when car manufacturers charge 4k more for a 2002 model that is basically the exact same thing under the hood as a 2001 but a bit prettier. Its a business and if it doesnt satisfy its market then it will disappear. When you get old enough and mommy stops holding your hand at the mall you can start taking a look around and notice every store caters to its own audience. Some people like dunkin donuts, some people like krispy kreme. Why would anyone care if someone chooses one over the other?
(Hint: The answer is "who the hell cares what they choose?")

Well Pc users, except people that use linux :) (check slashdot)i use linux for all my servers, but im not gonna bother to load it on my desktop machine. i try it every 6 months and so far i cant say that its very good alternative to windows or macos. Its gt too many anoyhing bugs that make me not wanna use it ever again.

Does this thing use 60 or 100 watt bulbs?

I checked the specs on apple's site but it doesn't say.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

To each his own...there's a market for PC's and there's a market for Macs. I would venture to say that most Mac users aren't looking for a computer in which they can change cpu's or video cards every couple of months...they're just looking for something that's straightforward, unique in design, and simply works as true plug and play should. Sure the new iMac isn't going to be the fastest 3d gaming rig in town, but that's not what it aims to be.

If I didn't have so much invested in pc parts, components, and software I'd be tempted to make the jump to Apple. Having said that, I'm still tempted by Apple. I'd love to have the best of both (pc and Mac) worlds.

*sigh*

I still say....

This is RETAIL PRICING and NOT a HOT DEAL.

Mac vs. PC belongs in Hardware.

It's amazing how people so readily jump on the anti-mac bandwagon with the only reason for doing so being they're PC users.

I've been using PCs since the days of the 8086/8088, and I figure that I'll be using a PC for years to come.

But there are some things that people don't realize about macs.

They are inherently a lot more stable. OSX is pretty much a shell for a UNIX interface. Unix is stable, no?
Apple makes the hardware AND the software, and best of all, gives you the software free.
Because of its UNIX roots, OSX can be reprogrammed on the fly making it a programmer's / tweakers dream.
Installation and setup is far easier than that of a PC. I know plenty of people to whom this would appeal to.

Actually, Steve Jobs owns pixar...

And the guy who designed the look was the same guy who designed that lamp...

And pixar is doing the first commercial for it...

Mac G4 tower (faster the better), Studio or cinema display, FCP3. Not cheap, but you'll have a very good system. In the mac world real time effects won't come any cheaper. A basic rig would cost you $1700 (733mhz), $700 (15"), and $1000 (FCP3...$300 for edu pricing). So its $3400 for the basic setup. You may be able to use one of the new iMac's (FCP3 needs a G4 for real time effects, and the more mhz the more effects will be real time) for less. The only catch is since you can't add different drives and such its not practicle for a NLE setup for anyone with more than a 'here's us at the grand canyon' idea of NLE. Top of the line mac stuff (Duel 800s, DVD-R, 22" cinema, and FCP3) would be ~$6000.

Thats what a mac system will cost you. I have no idea what a similar PC would run you.

<< Well, from reading this thread, it's nice to know that thread crapping is acceptable.

Let's face it: the one common thread that binds all readers of this forum is the desire and skill to create and update a PC cheaply. I dare say it's an aquired skill that many friends envy. :) I direct friends to updates, upgrades and new components all of the time.

In this regard we are not the iMac market. Who cares if we can put a geforce 3 into our system for $199 and the iMac is a generation behind. Well, actually, for that target market it isn't a generation behind. Someone in the iMac market doesn't care if he can get an additional 20% gain in frames per second. Once that person does, he's no longer a part of the iMac market. THEN begins the debate between a PC tower and a Mac tower. Someone who needs more than 60GB is not in the iMac market. Someone who needs one drive to read and another to burn in not in the iMac market. Someone who needs a floppy.... well, they should be fine with a used $100 computer. Does this mean that there are many people who are not in the iMac market? Sure, and that includes almost all of us.

To argue what is better is really an argument of who you are. If you're an anantech'er, fine. If you're an iMac'er, fine. I doubt there are many people in both categories. Fine.

Me, I do my graphics/video work on a G4 tower, watch dvd's on an Athlon HTPC, and run emulation ;) on a 486. If we're looking for the most efficient use of our hard earned money, I wouldn't do it any other way.

As for the dealworthiness: again, not so much for the regular readers here, but for anyone who wants a system to learn state of the art digital video editing, this lowers the cost of admission.

p.s. As for the comments that it's ugly: show me a man who thinks he's got a design that everyone will love and I'll show you an idiot.

Now That's a NICE post! Couldn't have said it better... kudos

cube went nowhere ,cuz it was overpriced (1600 or 1700 for the basic model)
the original imac had no expendability either, but it was priced right.

Ok little to relate the pc/mac discussion. PC is a supra or some other sports car. MAC is like a f1 cart. You can pimp out supra as much as you want, buts never gonna be as good as f1 cart. On the other hand f1 is specialized on the task its supposed to do, and unlike supra it would be silly to take in on a normal road.

<< "fastest iMac ever, with a Pentium-crushing 800MHz PowerPC G4 processor"

I guess the Intel processor is their only compitition. Nice to see it can crush a Pentium how about a PIV or PIII even?
>>

If you've ever glanced at the RC5 CPU statistics, you will see that the G4 800 (at 8,243,188 keys/sec) is a lot faster than a P4, P3 or even an Athlon clocked at 1739MHz (at 6,207,015 keys/sec).

It's fairly impressive how fast the G4 really is, but being that the majority of computer owners are really PC users...they really never touch an apple in our daily lives. ;) OS X is an amazing leap as far as operating systems, and hopefully microsoft will follow in apple's footsteps (as they have for many years now). I myself am a PC user who admires what Apple has done with OS X. I'd love to be able to run a unix based system but have compatibility with the thousands of applications out there written for both unix OS's and also for a specific GUI based OS.

Apple's G4 IS fast. Intel/AMD could use to learn some things from Apple. Slower clock rate is going to mean better power savings. No more need for 350Watt power supplies and extremely large capacity laptop batteries...

btw, all the key crunching stats are available at:
http://n0cgi.distributed.net/speed/

Also, those of you saying it's too expensive..yadda yadda. Well, Apple designs more to be a premium consumer company. They do not try to fit into the budget pc category. They give those who are willing to pay a little extra some unique things through design and technology. Instead of staring at our big box PC towers, and huge CRT monitors, we can have it all in one compact little object. For me, this is what I'd love to stick in my dorm. I have very little room and this thing would be excellent on a small desk. Not to mention, a lot of people like how 'cute' it looks. Women love it! ;)
