new hsf help

Ok so how do I got about changing out my current heatsink with a new one without damaging the processor? What's the safest way? My current one is one of the ones that's a real pain in the ass to unclip the clip things. So I have to clean off the old thermal paste? What's the best way to do that? Thanks.

Uhh.

There's really no other way to do it besides unclipping it and twisting it off. As for cleaning, a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol works nicely.

make sure you twist the hsf off the cpu.. i like rubbing alcohol and cue tips myself 😉

Ok that's what I thought just making sure. 🙂

oh yea one more thing though. The HSF I bought is the Spire Whisper Rock IV. It comes with pre applied thermal grease, is it as effective as artic silver do ya think? Wondering if it's worth the hassle of getting some additional thermal grease...

i would say yes its definetly worth it, however i'm sure it will work just fine with the preapplied paste, but with higher temps

I've actually found that using goo gone and a napkin works wonders in taking off old thermal paste from the heat sink and the cpu. Much more so than a q tip and rubbing alcohol. It's a lot quicker too.

i prefer isopropyl alcohol because it evaporates very quickly and little to no residue is left on whatever you're cleaning (ihs or hsf)
